Default Hvac blower only operates on high speed

1998 GS300

Symptom: HVAC blower only operates at high speed and disregards user input for any lower speed except off.

This was fixed by replacing a component called "Control, Blower Motor", pn 87165-22040. This part has been superceded by pn 87165-22050, procured mail order from a Toyota indy Sept 2010 for $165 + ship.

Access procedure...

1) Remove access cover at the top of the (US) passenger footwell. Three clips along front edge, courtesy light wire inside.
2) Remove glove compartment. Three screws along top edge, three clips along top edge, two bolts at lower corners. Glove compartment light wire inside, and some other yellow cable.
3) On left side, remove harness connector bracket and push the harness out of the way. One screw.
4) Unscrew white plastic plenum but otherwise leave plenum in place. Two screws.
4) Unscrew controller behind white plastic plenum and drop down. One screw.
5) Replacement part shown.

I have the same problem with my GS400. I wonder if I can replace the same part for my car?

It's very useful info. It is also a common problem with the GS. The fix is very easy and the cost of the replacement part is reasonably priced. (Used). This was the first thing I had to fix on my GS.
