Brake recommendation
My GS is ready for brakes. I've put nearly 35k miles since I purchased the car in Nov. '17. I don't feel any vibration when braking, just getting weak on grip. While I would prefer Lexus to do the job, I'm somewhat apprehensive of the nearly $500 cost. Does anyone trust other places do their brakes?

My local mechanic replaced the pads on my GS for around $150. Not very hard to do if you have tools and space at home, you can do them yourself. Plenty of YouTube how-to videos around.

No need to have Lexus do brakes. As cool as our cars are, they are not high-tech machines like a space shuttle. They are just like any other modern car out there. As with any Toyota, doing brakes outside of a dealership are as common as changing the motor oil. It's not rocket science.
It's hard to say what the Dealer is doing for $500. Is this only the brake pads? Is it only the fronts? What about the rotors? Either way, I'm sure the Dealer charges at least double of what it would cost by an independent mechanic. Going to the dealer is unnecessary. I never understood why people go there in the first place.

If you are just changing front pads, you can do them yourself in like 10 minutes. It takes the same amount of time to remove the wheel as it does to swap the pads.
Rotors are a different story of course.

Especially if it is the 1st time, you can just replace the pads. I would look into Akebono pads.
If the OE pads are not too pricey, they would be a good choice as well.
Good luck.

though brake pads are easy to replace, caution must be taken for obvious safety reasons and lots of people are understandably weary taking it on themselves.
I've replaced plenty of brakes in my life, over lots of cars with different designs so my confidence is high when I did my brakes on the GS (did full rotor change with new OE pads at 40k miles) which was very straightforward.
rotors alone are close to $300 (two piece f-sport) so if the dealer is completely replacing the rotors, adding new pads, and labor...then $500 is not too bad!
if not, there should be plenty of indy shops that can take care of a simple pad and rotor turn for ya (or hit up frotiss)!
