check your map info under options on the map screen, I think you can see what version your car has currently, might say what generation.
According to that chart a 2015 GS 350 is Gen 8. 2016 GS 350 are listed under both Gen 8 and Gen 9.

So now that I know that I need Gen 8 the question is where to purchase it. Local dealer or online?

I would check with a dealer for the correct one before purchasing. it doesn't matter if you buy it from a dealership in person or online, you get the same sd card. Just make sure it's a brand new one sealed in the packaging. Don't buy a used one. Once it's inserted into the nav unit it's locked to that car.

I just purchased a 2016 GS350 (not from a Lexus dealer). This is the SD card that is in my vehicle now, (PT219-GEN09-18) but it won't update. I took my car to the service dept. and they say the card is not for 2016. Can anyone confirm? I don't want to spend $210+ if I do have the correct part...

I think PT219-GEN08-17 is the SD card needed for your 2016 GS 350.

This time of year (fall around November) is usually when the new map updates become available. The newest update out this fall is/will be dated 2019. Your Lexus dealership can tell you if the newest map update is available yet.

Safe to assume this is the latest version now (using the same link)?

With that price - i'd rather install a carplay/AA unit and use Waze/Google Maps

Those are like 600(ish) and you have to tear dash apart to do it, so not sure how that is the same thing. No?

GEN9 V22.1 Navmap - Lexus (PT219-GEN09-22)

I had the NAV map updated in my 2018 GS 450h in December of 2021 and it was: Navigation Map Update and Calibrate (PT219-GEN09-21 GEN 9 V21.1).

So, there has obviously been another map update since 12/2021.
