Default Spoiler on GS Lux Package

I know this is a bit of a preference question, but I was looking through the introduction thread and probably 75% of our cars are F Sport, with the remaining a mix of base and lux package. I didn't know this, but it doesn't appear any of the lux package cars came with rear spoilers? Now I sort of dig the sleeper look, but at the same time, I like the spoiler too. I can't really decide. I know this is a lame mod, compared to everything else I see, but anyone with lux package add the spoiler after the fact? Did you do it as a DIY? How har was it? If not, what was the install cost and are you happy with it?

Thanks,

Thanks,
I've seen a few posts where people have installed the spoiler with VHB tape and it's installed cleanly that way with no drilling required. I'm assuming these people are just installing them on base/lux models since the Fs already come with the spoiler.

If I do it it'll have to be permanent. Nothing tape or glue related lasts long in the desert.

They killed the lux package in US for 2018 so it’s either base or fsport now

There are really very few [so-called] 'Base' model GS 350s. In fact, I do not recall ever seeing one and we have tons of GS 350s around here. Instead, they are likely the 'Premium' package. I'm guessing the most popular models are likely about even between the the Premium package and the F-Sport package with the Luxury package next and then the Base model...and most of them are RWD versus the AWD.

The factory spoiler can be bought on eBay, painted. It will require you to drill holes, but it can certainly be done.

If you use 3M automotive double-sided tape and follow the directions you couldn't get that spoiler off the trunk unless you sawed it off. The proper tape can hold large body kit / ground effect pieces on cars running over 150 mph (Don't ask me how I know!). That little lightweight spoiler on the trunk isn't going anywhere the trunk lid isn't going. The key, like with so many things, is the preparation, which is really simple.

1- Use the adhesive promoter when attaching double-sided tape to the surfaces. The adhesive promoter helps to bond the materials and the chemicals in the tape.

2- Use alcohol to remove contaminants, wax or sealant from painted surfaces to bond.

3- Do not install unless the temperature is 70°F or higher. There is no need to use heat (e.g. hair dryer). The hot sun will help the tape set and bond.

4- No 'cure' time is needed for the double-sided tape. As soon as pressure is applied the bond is set and will only get stronger with time. Applying pressure for a few minutes is all that is needed - no prolonged cure time is required.

5- To remove a body piece that has been applied with 3M automotive double-sided tape it is recommend that it be removed with fishing line to get under the tape and then the remaining tape be removed with an adhesive remover (e.g. Goo Gone, Goof Off, etc.).

Does the factory spoiler even have enough surface area to use the tape method? Can’t tell by the pics, but looks like it only has four flat spots where it would attach via screws?

Mine is installed on a Lux package and is only held on by 3M tape. I was not willing to drill holes in the trunk to install a small lightweight wing.

As far as permanence goes: the 3M adhesives are effectively permanent: not natural force will remove them, yet they can still be using mono-filament line.

I added the regular spoiler on mine not the F Sport one. To me the regular one looks better. It uses tape and I did drill the holes. The template makes this pretty much fool proof. Just take your time and you will not have any problems. The tape is applied around the outside edges and is already in place when you receive the spoiler so no big deal there.

My '17 Lux came with a OEM spoiler. The dealer first located one that did not have it and I thought that is what I wanted. However, my exact color combo was only avail with the spoiler at the time as the only difference. I think it really does make it look better after seeing a couple of non- fsport GS's without them.

Well, the spoiler has been ordered and give the 3M tape recommendation a try, since others have had good luck with it. Now that I think back, in 2010 I added heat shields to a bike that came with the 3M tape and adhesion promoter. Those things never moved, even though being cooked on every ride. Worth a try.
