Default steering issue

I recently purchased a pre-owned 2015 GS 350. There is an issue with the "steering". When driving on highway at speeds 55 plus it will pull to one side and it's like the steering wheel gets "stuck" or tight. I have to pull it back into the lane. This is not auto lane correction. This is dangerous! It is so bad that I am trading this vehicle after 4 months. It is not safe to drive. And it's not just me. My husband feels it too when he's driving. It has been in the Lexus shop twice and they can not find anything wrong with it. We don't understand at all how someone can drive this car and not think something is wrong with it. HAs anyone felt this with your lexus??? Help!1

Does it only happen at 55 mph and above? Has the car ever been in a wreck? Did you buy the car from a Lexus dealership? Has the Lexus service department acknowledged that they detect what you are complaining about? If so, have you requested that Lexus contact corporate to discuss the issue and get a specialist involved?

It sounds like there is a binding somewhere in the steering mechanism or possibly in the steering rack, but you would likely detect that at practically any speed, not just when driving at 55 mph or faster. I have known one GS 350 that had issues with the steering rack that took corporate to get involved in which the car was finally titled a 'Lemon', the steering rack was completely replaced and the car sold at auction.

Assuming Lexus rep has gone out with you driving the car (or themselves with you in the car) to show them exactly how it happens?

I had a 2008 ISF with this “sticky” steering wheel issue. I know exactly what you mean and it didn’t occur all the time nor can the dealer duplicate the issue because it was intermittent. I think the problem is the steering ecu which is under the car battery. There were others that swapped in the 2011+ ISF steering ecu and has it reprogrammed in their 2008-2010 ISF. I never got the issue fixed, but it was definitely a safety issue and annoying to say the least esp when no dealer will acknowledge the problem.

Default steering issue

We put new tires on it at the suggestion of the service dept. Didn't help. It does it on a perfectly smooth road - no bumps or holes. Yes, I drove with a service guy. Of course it didn't do it with him. It is unpredictable. It could start 5 minutes after driving or 25 minutes. I didn't buy it from a Lexus dealership. It is certified. I was told it hasn't been wrecked. The service dept did finally say they "felt something" and "adjusted something". I have not asked Lexus to contact corporate but did think about that. I don't know how long it will take going through corporate. And if corporate deems it a lemon, how long will that take and will they give me a comparable car? Do I act like the service dept - like there's nothing wrong with it and trade it? I don't know what to do.

Your car is a 2015, so it is now four years old, or approaching four years old. You said that you did not buy the car from a Lexus dealership, yet it is 'certified'. I suspect you mean it is still under the 48 Month/50,000 Mile Basic Warranty. I suspect your warranty will be ending soon. With that said, I would not expect anything new to happen from Lexus anytime soon even if you pursued all avenues in order to get it fixed. Nor would I expect to receive a resolution that meets your satisfaction with respect to Lexus declaring your [now] four year-old car a lemon...or giving you a comparable value vehicle.

I would not be surprised to learn that your car had been involved in an accident.

If the car was mine I would seriously consider trading it in on some other vehicle.

Yes, I would have the alignment checked sounds like it could've been involved in an accident.

Alignment was checked and done at the Lexus service dept. It was a one-owner lease before me. It had 26,600 miles when I purchased it. The car is great except for the way it drives and that's kind of a big deal. I'm not wasting anymore time on it. I am trading it. This is my 2nd lexus and I love the brand. I'm going to try one more time. Didn't have a good experience with my first pre-owned ES 350. Salesman lied about it being wrecked. I want another GS 350. Any suggestions or recommendations? Is the GS 350 a reliable car overall?

All Lexus vehicles are considered very reliable. There can always be a lemon here or there with a new vehicle. When buying a used vehicle, especially from a non-Lexus seller, your chances of having unexpected problems increase appreciably in my opinion. Does it make you wonder why your car was a lease turn-in, but a Lexus dealership didn't want to sell it on their own lot? A significant number of used GS 350s have been mistreated and/or modified to some degree and put back carelessly to stock when traded-in or the lease turn-in comes around. If your car was not in an accident you may have bought a car that had been modified or mistreated, thus was why the Lexus dealership didn't want to sell it themselves.

If you are determined to trade-in your '15 GS 350 on another GS 350 I would try to workout a trade with a Lexus dealership and receive the remaining factory warranty and the CPO warranty. Check the Carfax for accidents and try to get the Lexus dealership's agreement in writing that it has not been in an accident.

Thanks bclexus! It's a little ironic that my GS came from Dallas :-) The salesman that found this car is now looking for me another one. My daddy was a car salesman for 30 years. . . wish he was still in the business :-(

This story sounds familiar.

Take a read over this topic: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/gs-...lem-16-gs.html

Does your situation sound similar? If so, I would PM mask0425x to see if you can get an update from him on getting his issue recorded and if his dealer was able to resolve his issue.

All the best,

I read this and the above thread. It sounds like something to do with the EPS. I believe our cars have speed sensitive steering and electric power steering. It sounds like the power assist or the speed sensing parts are intermittently malfunctioning. There is an EPS computer module that sounds like it may be overheating. CPUs don't like heat. Without power assist, the quick ratio nature of our steering rack would feel quite dead if you don't know what is happening. Instead of one finger, 2lbs of pressure, it would take both hands and 20+lbs of pressure to affect steering.

If it were mine, I would pull the fuse on the LKA to be sure it is NOT being enabled improperly. I've driven a car with that and it felt like it was hunting between the white and yellow line.

Thank you for your recommendation! I will do that. It sounds like you really understand the problem.

I don't know that is the problem but it might help eliminate a few things. Do you remember it being hot when the problem happens?
