No it's the top dash panel with the opening for the HUD. He's buying it thinking that panel is easily removable and held together by clips. This is an alternative to cutting the opening in the dash. It's a pretty expensive piece. Also interested, but I personally would not do the mod because without the HUD windshield you will have a ghosting/shadowing effect.

No, that is just an extra piece that has the HUD cutout already. You do not need to get it. This was just an expensive alternative to cutting into my existing dash. I tend to keep my cars in original condition so I try to avoid cutting into parts if I can. My hope is that sub-panel is easy to remove so I can just pop the expensive one I bought. However, if it is not simple, I will simply return the part and make the cutout myself. The HUD unit I bought used. You can try to find them on Ebay or from a junkyard. I believe the LS and GS use the same HUD. pre-2014 is black and white, 2014 and above is color.

If it bothers you that much, nothing a piece of windshield film won't fix. http://a.co/42f2I8W. But I understand the hesitancy.

EDIT: Found these pictures on Ebay. Still can't figure out how the top part is clipped in. Boy this is going to be a fun project.

Any update on this? Was the top part of the dash removable?

Unfortunately, the upper dash piece has been on back-order throughout the USA. Been waiting since 02/12... However, found some pictures that seem to indicate the piece should be easy to swap out.

Thats great news for this Mod.
Based on the picture the underside already has the opening for the HUD marked. See the slightly angled box in the geenn. You could just pop this top part of the dash off and make the cut with the part outside the car.

Please upload pictures of the underside of the HUD dash when you receive it to compare.

Here is the other side of it in red

Of course, will document the whole process for anyone else who wants to do the same mod.

I wish I bought that 2013 HUD on eBay for $221 in December, that was a steal. Someone got a great deal on it.

I think I am going to head down this path and search for these parts at local junkyards because these will be very hard to come by in USED condition online.

I definitely no longer want to buy these items NEW, just not worth it at the $1963.94 + shipping + tax + labor.

Will keep you fellas updated when I do get this installed.
Did you get this little harness? It plugs into the back of the HUD unit and connects to the dash harness?

Yes, I have all the pieces. Everything is ready to go except the dash replacement piece. I would have completed the project by now but the part is back-ordered and is starting to tick me off. Been 2 weeks waiting on this part...

That happened to me before from a dealership, until they finally said it was discontinued or no longer available for order. Hopefully that's not the case. How much did you end up paying for the HUD unit?

There's another HUD on eBay today for $374.

It's so tempting knowing that the dash can be adapted if you can get the trim piece.
If I used the nav, I would totally spring for this.

Edit: Ah now I understand why it didn't look right: it's missing it's cover.

That HUD unit is missing the top cover and it's not a part Lexus sells separately.

That eBay unit looks like this:

When it should look like this:

Well I got fed up and called one of the biggest Toyota distributors in the country. They show 0 inventory for the dash sub-assembly and that is why my order has been on back order for 2 weeks. The part order was sent to overseas manufacturing with no estimated manufacturing lead-time. Guess I will just have to be patient...
