Angry My Cruising Range went from 330 to 260

What's going on with the Cruising Range here?

I remember my GS was doing the same thing, it went from 300+ miles full tank to 270 and now my RC went from 300+ to 280 and now 260.

Will it keep going down? Is it bad gas or what?!

It should be based off your last tank mileage.

When I take a trip in my GS, say Seattle to Portland and get 27-28 mpg, it will show a range when I refill well over 300 miles. Then when I drive around town and get only 16-17 mpg on the next tank, my range at the next fillup will be well under 300 miles.

Ah.. That's why I've been getting low 200s. My MPG was at 13-15 at best.

That makes a lot of sense. Thanks man!!!

Winter gas is also kicking in around now so mileage goes down a bit

Keep a close watch on your use of A/C and heater. It can easily create a difference of 3 mpg. Drive with A/C off (or at ambient temperature) and with A/C at full blast and see the difference. My mpg drops during the summer months and goes up during fall and spring.

The other usual suspects are tire pressure, balancing, alignment.

Costco Gas is top-tier rated and is on par with other top-tier brands like Chevron, Shell, 76. I would even argue that it's better than some stations due to the high standards of maintenance for the pumps and facilities. They measure flow rate quite often to make sure the filter is still good. Also better security and decreased likelihood of having your credit card info being stolen.

It's not really a gas quality thing. The blend and additives are changed in the winter to account for the low temperatures and it can affect mileage.

Reset (delete) your onboard trip and mileage data.

PS - How's married life?

Going well man!

Hey I wonder... I've been using the remote start from the app and let the car idle for like 5-10 mins twice a day and I noticed my MPG dropped to 11-13 when I got in.

If the cruising range is based on this, maybe this is the cause of my low number?

Idling will definitely kill mileage

I just filled up last night and I won't remote start the car at all for now. We'll see if the range goes back up.

In addition to winter gas, vehicles get worse mileage the cooler the temps are. Longer warm up times greatly affect this.

Any long term idle works against mileage. Not terribly but burn vs actual mileage will suffer just based on the math. I can’t really imagine that it’s that much overall though.

The real culprit is what kind of driving you’re doing. Lots of city vs lots of highway, driving leadfoot style, etc...

That is the most important question! A happy married life is the only sure way of getting high gas mileage
