Default Cheap Leather Steering Wheel (2016 GS 350)

2016 GS 350 with only 8600 miles on the odometer, car is 8 months old and the top of the steering wheel has a blister that has ruptured and two others in the works. Took the car to my local Lexus Service Department who initially classified it as "WEAR and TEAR"...really????

Asked to speak with the Service Manager who took his own photos and along with mine has sent a email to the Factory Rep. I'm interested in seeing how this on plays out. Hopefully I'm pleasantly surprised on how they offer to take care of it.

For a car that has an MSRP of nearly $55,000 from a brand that constantly claims the Pursuit of Perfection and Experience Amazing...right now, I'm unimpressed.

BTW...I don't wear rings and I don't tend to even touch that part of the steering wheel when driving.

I guess a fair comparison would be how steering wheels of other owners of equal or older models are wearing. My 2013 with 44k miles doesn't have any damage...

2014 with 34k miles has zero wear on the wheel. Possibly dug your nails in as the wheel moved back to the center through a turn of something? Regardless hopefully the dealer takes care of it.

Doesn't look like "normal wear and tear" to me. Something cut that leather. I hope they do a goodwill replacement for you.

Had two GSs "13 and "14 and no steering leather wear. They won't replace the steering wheel anyways, just fill and spray color on the top. I know a guy who works on my cars does work for local dealerships they call him when they have to fix the seats etc.

2014 with 30k and no wear on the steering wheel. Might be an easier fixed to just fill and spray color on top.

Seems like wear n tear to me and not factory fault.

I suspect that the heat this summer has not helped. This is my 5th Lexus, never seen anything like this before. Not a fan of the leather they chose for the upper portion of the steering wheel. I like the wheel on my previous IS 350 F Sport and wife's 2015 RX 350 F Sport much better.

Just a thought, but do you happen to use the lane keep Assist (LKA) and have it set to vibrate maybe the vibration caused it to crack? and was it a small bubble first?

No LKA on my GS. I never saw the bubble, just the result. It looks a little more elongated now that the service advisor picked at it. The reason I think it's a bubble is because of the bubble shaped defects below that have not ruptured yet.

I have a 2013, just hit 70k miles and don't have steering wheel wear at all and never heard of anyone having an issue like that. I Feel for ya though and good luck on the repair!

Thanks! I have a shop that does really good leather repair if Lexus isn't willing to address the issue. I've also contemplated sending the wheel to redlinegoods.com and having them completely recover the steering wheel with Perforated Nappa Leather.
