Default Replace car battery = have to go to dealer?

Can you replace the car battery of a 2014 GS350 by yourself? Or will it mess everything up?

I ask because a friend has a Mercedes that will get SCREWED if you try to replace the battery on your own. Basically the car has to re-learn almost everything once again. So a dealership has to do it.

I understand you may lose memory presets (which I hear can be avoided using jumper cables connecting old and new battery before removal).

I'm not worried about presets reseting. I'm worried about the car going haywire and losing basic functions.

No need go to dealer for battery replacement. Just swap out the battery then you good to go.

If you worry about losing radio station, memory presets then you could use a jump cable to connect the new battery to battery terminal cable while remove the old battery.

What do you do with the old battery, just throw it in the trash?

No. Recycle at a recycling center. It has hazardous materials in it. In some states you can be fined if you dump it.

Garages are supposed to accept them without question or charge (no pun intended)—at least in New York. I would think that's pretty universal. Those things are toxic.

You usually get a core charge back when you return the old battery to the place where you bought the new one.

Stock battery has something like a case on it and there's some cables attached to the side of it. Do we need that case for the new non-OEM battery?

I heard BMW's were this way but didn't know Mercedes were as well. Manufactures who do this crap to their customers deserve to lose them. There is nothing special that is required when changing out a battery. It's a simple 12v system but BMW and apparently Mercedes have decided to complicate an otherwise simple system. I'm so over my love affair with German cars its not even funny. Our BMW ownership experience was a total disaster (reliability).

As for your GS350, changing the battery is very simple. I was able to swap out the old battery from my wife's GS350 and install a new one from Walmart. I like Walmart batteries and have good luck with them in the past. Definitely make sure you turn in your old battery as a "core" as it's worth at least $10 bucks.

BMW's do require a dealer computer when replacing the battery. They claim the charging algorithm needs to be reset. Call any BMW dealer and you will have a heart attack on the cost of a new replacement battery.

BMW wanted $60 just to load-test a battery. NTB (National Tire & Battery) will load-test your battery at no-charge, and they now carry batteries with the special venting port for most BMWs at a fraction of the cost compared to BMW replacing the battery.

That's cool! Do they have a computer that can also reset the charging algorithm in the car? Just curious! The only BMW I will ever own will be a E39 M5. I will never own another newer BMW ever again.

They'll always back-feed (parallel-feed) the car's system while changing the battery so nothing needs to be reset.
