Toyota and by extension Lexus are conservative in the evolution of their cars...I suspect this is the reason their cars rank high for quality. So there maybe an eight speed for the F sport in '14, but I doubt a new tranny for the other models. The only thing that might motivate Lexus to drop an extra 2 speeds in, is if it would push higher sales volumes for the GS. Does this market decide to buy based on the number of gears in the transmission or is it other factors?
I personally am happy with the drive train as is. Doesn't the LFA have 6 speeds?

Number of gears had no impact on whether I bought this car or not. I for one, want HP. However, low end torque would have been nice too.

Toyota already has the supercharged version of GS350's 2GR-FSE engine combined with 8 speed in Japan. This version makes 380 hp. It is currently used on Toyota Crown Athlete TRD, which is pretty much the twin of the GS platform.
I guess Lexus USA doesn't see enough demand to justify the certification of this engine.
However, if Lexus is serious with their F performance line, they do need to bring it here, period.

I would venture to say RWD GS's will get the 8 speed. They gave the 3GS a considerable engine change after the first year, and that year was a real long year like 2013 has been for the 4GS.

I am glad they haven't gotten intothe turbo BS like BMW and Audi. They are great for adding power, they're freaking horrible for long term reliability. If there is an issue with the turbo out of warranty, get ready for a staggering repair bill, and maybe a fubared motor in the process.
Maybe I am just getting to be a crotchety old man, but for a car that's driven daily I would take naturally aspirated every time.

So the F-Sport doesn't have it? WFT!! hopefully the fog mod will help with visibility..

Lexus certainly may put an 8 speed auto into the 4GS next year, however don't hold your breath.
I have test driven the 3IS 3.5 8 speed unit, and expect delivery next week.
I can hardly tell the difference between the old 2IS 3.5 6 speed, and the new 3IS 3.5 8 speed.
In fact, the new bigger and heavier 3IS 3.5 8 speed feels a tad slower both in the straight-line, and around corners.
This may be due to the 3IS's bigger size and heavier weight.
In my opinion, people who own the 4GS with the 6 speed gearbox aren't missing out on much...

Seems like that 3.5L V6/8-speed combo, at least in the IS, is inferior to the 3.5L V6/6-speed combo in the GS. This is especially telling in the 5-60 and 50-70 runs. It would appear that the IS 8-speed takes more time to make up its mind about which gear to choose, and that hurts acceleration. Odd choice by Lexus. Obviously the 8-speed helps with marketing, but it seems they didn't have the time (or just got lazy) and couldn't tune its shift behavior/responsiveness for ideal performance.
I too am waiting (impatiently) for information about the MY2014 GS. I hope the 6-speed stays based on the numbers above, and I am curious to see what trim changes there are. Probably minor or none at all, but I'm getting antsy.

The 8 speed is designed for fuel efficiency and as evidenced in many other posts, a stand still shows less down time in shifting, but if you are rolling, you will find yourself in more of a preferred power band with greater frequency.
I'd still take the 8 speed, but this may be as discussed in other threads something that is going to be on the '15 year models with possibly a new motor under the hood.
However, I don't think this will happen until 2016 if I were to guess because the IS and GS generally share motors, so it might be too fast for a new engine. I would love to see a V8 though.

With all the extra weight the TL and GS are carrying, it might be similar. Our cars are like 4,000 lbs wet. That's a lot of weight to be hauling around. I think my old Camry was only like 3,200 lbs.
