Dumbest way to get hit but here it goes !
As I was pulling into a parking lot, the car in front of me pulled into a spot but quickly put their reverse on , I stopped my car about 5-8 feet away and started honking as I saw their intention to start backing up without looking and indeed they did ! Unfortunately I could not back up before they hit my car as there was someone behind me already. Damage wasn't too big but to make matter worse, the person has $1 a day insurance (obtained through Medicaid in NJ). Point is that their insurance does not cover collision,
if the driver decides not to pay for the damages, I would have to take them to court 🤦🏽*♀️.
I took the person’s information and did a police report a few days later, not that it matters as there is no insurance company to submit a claim to but it will be useful if I decide to take them to court.
Driver asked me to get a quote, send it to them and then they would pay me. I did all of this but of course now they want to get an estimate from another shop which is fine by me as long as they use the correct paint and do a good job.
The quote I got was for $900-1200 because they are unsure of the cost of Lexus paint; once I agree to get the job done there they will reach out to Lexus and find out the exact price.
Things that need to be fixed are : front bumper, fender, and repaint both of these things. I have attached the pictures of the damage. Let me know what you guys think, as I have a feeling that I will end up paying for it until I resolve the matter with the driver.
Yikes whoever installed the PPF on your car didn't go all the way around the edges looks terrible(fenders, hood).
If you front bumper has PPF(which it looks like it does) after getting it fixed/repainted. Installing new PPF will cost $600-800 depending on what film/installer you go with. You could easily be talking about a $2,000 repair. Also they might have to blend the paint into the driver side fender, so it would not surprise me if it costs $2500 to get this looking as good as it was before.

The request for another quote is a waste of time: there's no way this could be significantly less than $1k.
Any time there is a panel repair and paint, you're already around $1k.
For leverage, you can have an adjuster from your ins give you an estimate.
If you file under your own un/underinsured policy, they go after the other party directly.
That might be all the leverage you need to induce payment and save yourself time.

Personally I would just run it through my own insurance. It could be covered under your uninsured/under insured coverage. Let your insurance do the work.

OP - These guys are right. Have your insurance handle everything for you. That is why you have insurance, and why you pay your insurance premiums. You should never be dealing with the individual that damaged your vehicle nor their insurance company/agent unless your insurance tells you it is okay for you to do so.
Yeah I would definitely run this through your own insurance. Your own insurance can handle pursuing that other guy for repayment which can become a huge hassle and very time consuming, so it's way better to just let them handle that for you. This is basically why you pay for insurance.

My deductible is only $500, it would definitely be cheaper and more convenient to do this. Have you had experience with submitting claims under uninsured/underinsured coverage? Did it affect your rate? Only reason I did not think about doing it through the insurance in fear of my rate going up. I live in Jersey , rates are high enough as it is 🤦🏽

The car came wrapped when I bought it ! I’ve been taking it off little by little as it looks old and faded now. Haven't found a shop in my area that does it ! I live in South Jersey, most shops here run away from anything that requires “extra work “

Yes, our Highlander was hit by an uninsured motorist a couple years back, to the tune of about $4k in damage.
We paid the deductible and got our car fixed. My insurance went after the driver for the deductible amount. They were successful in recovering that from him, and refunded me the deductible amount that I had paid.
It was no fault of my own, so there was no impact to my rates whatsoever.

The other person only has state insurance, its liability and thats it. I have read up on it and it basically leaves me with two options: come to an agreement with the person or take them to court for payment. Not sure how my insurance company would go about this but I will actually call them tomorrow and find out all the details. Thank you.
Did the police report assign fault? If the other driver was found to be at fault, then I am not sure why his liability insurance wouldn't cover it, if indeed that's what his insurance is.

I apologize, I misread the information for the other drivers insurance. Its not even liability! I just realized I confused everyone trying to give some input. Basically some bs insurance given to people with state insurance (Medicaid) so they can drive around, wreck cars and not be at fault. If I want to collect some sort of payment from this person, I will most likely be going to court.
Heres a quick overview of what the insurance is.
While eligible drivers with dollar a day policies receive proof of insurance and are considered to be driving legally, SAIP insurance does not meet New Jersey's minimum auto insurance requirements for most drivers.
The coverage provided by the Special Automobile Insurance Policy only pays for emergency treatment and the most severe of driver injuries but offers no liability coverage to pay for injuries or damages to others.
Most ongoing treatment and the cost of damages to others are the responsibility of the dollar a day insurance policyholder, meaning this policy should only be considered as a last resort.
The limited coverage of dollar a day car insurance policy means that it's unlikely to offer any coverage to you as the policyholder in most accidents.
Instead, you would be responsible for the costs of:
Any ongoing and nonemergency treatments that don't apply to your brain or spinal cord. You can request coverage through Medicaid, but you would have to navigate the process yourself.
All injuries to other parties involved in an accident where you were at fault. If another driver or injured party sues you, your SAIP insurance would not assist with any legal costs.
All damage to others' property in an accident where you were at fault.
Any damage to your own vehicle or other property, no matter the cause.
OP - Stop trying to figure out the other driver's insurance. That is not your responsibility, nor is it your expertise. Tell your insurance company/agent what happened and provide them with the driver's name, DL number, police report (if any) and whatever other 'paper' documents (e.g. other driver's insurance coverage name and policy number). Your insurance company/agent is the expert, not you! Let them figure out what to do and who to go after. That is why you have insurance on your vehicle, and why you pay the premium you do...so you don't have to deal with crap you don't understand.
Can you imagine if every driver that had an accident or a traffic event with another driver had to handle things by themselves? You'd have some people knocking on doors and dragging them outside to beat the crap out of them. You'd have all sort of mayhem. Be thankful YOUR insurance company/agent is there for you to take care of matters. Let them do their jobs, which is why you pay a healthy premium...
Insurance is actually your attorney when it's someone else is at fault. That's why we pay outrageous rates anyway. Dealing with someone personally to pay for your damages without proper insurance will get you burnt most every time.
