What year is your car? I didnt get any pink flips or anything like that, the vdieo would dopr out completely, like teh cable was being unplugged. I posted pics of my install in this thread starting on page 15.
2018 GS 350. I did a factory reset but I'm at work so I can't test much right now. I plan on testing more when I leave. The volume issue is fixed so that was a big scare of mine; However now I'm worried about the fact that I cant start the car with the VLINE plugged in. Contacted their support for that and If they have an easy "Hard" reset without pulling the power cable out of the VLINE.
The Looped back port is for my Dashcam. Didn't want to hardwire it because of the 5v they use rather than 12. Don't like the way it looks but meh.
EDIT:
Factory reset + Mic Gain set to highest on GROM + CarPlay = Fixed sound!! Sound volume is now 1:1 with OEM. If anyone in the future has any questions with regards to this setup please let me know. This was a fun one to do!
~5 Hours soup to nuts including running the cable down the center console (First time disassembling car as well).
If anyone wants videos, demos or has any questions please let me know. I'm super picky about my technology and this has been a dream!
Glad to hear you’re all good to go! Have you tested phone calls on CarPlay tho? Sound on calls seems to be significantly lower than music and I always find myself cranking up the volume to hear my callers. Let me know if you found a fix for that too
Yeah, starting out with the VL2 was a little rough , but i cant really hate now. i can load any android app and carplay is very snappy. I have youtubetv, youtube, sling, maps, google assistant, a snes emulator and a few other apps. Not everything looks perfect due to the weird aspect ratio of our screens and the facet that they cannot be rotated to vertical orientation , but thats more the app dev's issue than GROM's.

Maybe you could splice in a button to cut the power? A normally closed pushbutton like this:
Well if they are smart and have a supercap and a rtc built-in to the VL2, they could potentially allow you to control the HVAC with an app, so you remote start the car and adjust the climate via their app. You would need to have a hotspot on your car that turned on with the car...Just throwing ideas out....
I was thinking of putting something like this in but there has to be a way to hard restart their unit without a power unplug and plugin. Maybe a button combo or something.

Maybe working on some type of screen overlay like the factory screen. Check out the pictures below. I would be utterly satisfied if they could make this possible Shortcut to the side screen Volume indicator Climate indicator

Those would be very very useful, especially the volume indicator.
I definitely want the volume overlay. It's a PITA to click steering wheel volume and not know where you're at. I have gotten used to using the volume ****, at least I can feel something. I've asked GROM to implement this many times. They said some Lexus Infotainment it is not possible to do volume overlay. Hope ours is not on that list.

I think the lexus infotainment thing they said is a slight cop out; all video either passes thru the VL2 or is generated directly by the VL2, so it is more of a limitation with the VL2 if anything.. If the VL2 can create an overlay on the overall Android GUI, which honestly may not be possible, then they can put a volume overlay on the VL2. Even if it can, it honestly may not work with carplay, as i do not know if they can overlay on that app.
