16.3 MPG is it normal??
Or does it do something to do with the compressor?
Just curious if anyone knows. I tried searching for "Eco mode" in the Owner's Manual, but I cannot find much on the specifics besides just general info.
TIA,

Not to get too carried off topic, but I'm curious what the Eco mode actually limits in the A/C? Are you saying that it Eco mode doesn't allow you to run the fan at full blast?

It seems to me idling for any length of time really kills the MPG's on this car. Maybe at some point it will come with an auto engine shut off/on when your stopped at a red light. BMW's 4 cylinder 528 do it. This is the first car I've ever owned that didn't get slightly better MPG's than what it claimed. Highway mileage is doable if you set the cruise on 60-65, but the claimed city mileage is very tough if you are doing a lot of red light time. The gas tank is a little on the small side for the mileage it gets.
I got 22 MPG today, driving 70-75 MPH for 25 miles with no traffic since everybody is off today. If I drive like that longer I could get close to 30 easy.
Now I know my problem for bad MPG.. It's not that the car is still breaking in and it's not that it needs oil change. It's the gotdamn SoCal traffic!
As soon as I hit traffic this car goes under 20 MPG.

I'd be very surprised if that is the only thing it effects. The fan speed would have very little, if any effect on fuel mileage. I'd bet the compressor is cycling off more often.
Look into the PSI on your tires? I was setting mines at 35psi and was getting about 18mpg. After I got my alignment done, the tech recommended i set the PSI to about 40. I've been getting about 20mpg for the past 2 weeks.
Didin't notice any airflow change when going to back and forth to ECO but did notice the air coming out the vent was warmer in ECO.
Seeing the compressor uses several HP when running it seems logical cycling it would give you better mileage and warmer air.
But hey that's just a hypothesis from a few simple tests.
Agreed you would get better gas mileage but you also get a little rougher ride (less comfortable) if thats what your into. Also, with higher tire press, handling becomes a little more responsive but not as grippe in the sport + setting and a little harsher ride.
Is there a magic mileage number where the engine tune on a new vehicle will changes itself?
My car hit 5000km a couple day's ago and I took a trip today and got 28 mpg traveling at 82 mph(130km/hr. on cruise)
About 4 weeks ago I took the EXACT same trip with very similar conditions and got 19 mpg ? And the cars numbers jive with the calculated numbers from filling up before and after each trip.
So how did the cars gas mileage increase that much ? The only thing that changed after the first trip was oil/filter(free six month or...) and the dealer dropped the tire pressure to 34 psi from 38 psi and maybe they tweaked something?
I'm a LOT happier with the mileage now!!!!

So something to try. Driving in Eco when in traffic and I was consistently under 17 MPG depending on the week with my long term average (~5 months) about 16.3.
However the last couple weeks I've managed to both accelerate faster than I traditionally did and get better mileage surprisingly. Instead of using Eco mode and using just the throttle to manipulate the transmission to get the acceleration I'm looking for, I switched to exclusively driving in sport and manually shifting the transmission as quickly as possible through the gears. My 2 week average is now at 18.4 mpg.
I have a 6-speed so my typical shift pattern is to get into 2nd around 2.4k RPM coming from 1st, and get into 4th between 30-35 MPH ( I've found that you tell the computer to put the car into 4th nearly instantly when accelerating in 2nd...it takes a bit of time for the transmission to get there though; it's not like the 1st - 2nd shift request which can be ignored by the computer if you initiate it too early). The torque converter is doing *alot* of slipping with this style of driving which probably isn't too great for the longevity of the transmission but you can get some very good acceleration using this method in 4th gear as the car keeps the RPM pegged at ~2.1K which seems to be the stall speed of the converter.
You can get into 6th around 45 MPH.
But in general this brings me back to the driving style I've used in manuals where I'd drive the even gears (2nd, 4th, 6th) when just putting around town.
Something to try. I'd be curious to see if anyone else sees an improvement with this style of driving.
