I wish this engine would rev to 9K like the LFA.

 

While we are talking about RPM, and didn't want to start new thread, when do I shift when in sport+ and manual mode? In my old IS it would flash red around the meter telling me to shift, but in this 2014 Lexus GS350 f-sport it doesn't. So I usually shift around 4000-4500 rpm am I doing it wrong?

 

From my experience, they are pretty close as far as power, but I will mention that I think the G is more responsive at low RPM. I've noticed that the power in the GS comes on much more smoothly. Size-wise they are nearly identical as well, but they don't necessarily feel that way (The GS is 190", the G37 is 187").

 

I mean you're not doing it "wrong" but you're not exactly having "sport +" fun either. After about 1500 miles on my car, I let it sing. Occasionally pushing it far. I think about 7k rpms. But I'd say at 6k is the best time to smack the upshift paddle.

One thing I really like about the GS is that in manual mode it will let you really rev high, and when you shift there's not a delay. In some cars they don't rev any higher than they would in auto and when you shift there's a super long delay. I'm happy with my F Sport

I drive in M mode 99% of the time cause I can have full control of the car. I normally shift at 3-4K and sometimes at 5-6K when I'm passing someone that's hogging the fast lane. I do push this car from time to time cause it's fun and that's why I got this car. If I wanna drive slow I'd get the CT or a Prius.

 

You could be right. I was basing my experience off of my 2004 G35 sedan, which was specced at 261 bhp (195 kW), 258 lb·ft (350 N·m). That' s very square. The latest G37's measure 328 hp (245 kW) 269 lb·ft.

The GS 350, by comparison, is 306hp, 277 lb/ft of torque, which is still down on overall hp from the G37 but very close in torque, and still lopsided compared to the G35.

The benefits to "square" engines (for lack of a better word) are torque available starting at low rpm's, which gives you that nice shove off the line. Of course most diesels destroy gasoline engines when it comes to torque so let's not bring them up.
