Speaking of trunk, does your GS300 trunk feel much heavier than other cars?
Man, it's almost like lifting 15 pound weight each time.
OK so it isn't me! I thought I had some failed struts or something similar. It is one of the only trunks I know of that doesn't pop open at least halfway like on a German sedan or even a Corolla... It's impossible to open without a free hand and it weighs a bazillion pounds.

It's difficult to open
But when I close it, it's a dream in comparison
Mine one did work. There's white plastic under the rubber, which worked. I bought some cheap rubber replacement from ebay. If your button under the rubber does not work, it might require further inspection.
Mine was like this when I got the car, and I initially thought that the button didn't work. If yours isn't working, I would suggest that you check to make sure the trunk opener is enabled (there is a switch in the glove box), and then try pushing (pretty hard) on the trunk button and hold it for several seconds. I think in the LPS settings you might be able to set the time you have to hold down the button and it could be set to the longest duration before activating the opener.
If the cover is badly melted, the job can be a bear. I was able to remove the button from the outside of the trunk, clean off the melted goo, and replace the cover, but it took me at least an hour to get the job done because of the clean-up work.
There are several replacement covers available -- I used the
