Default Parking Assist Sensors

EDIT: Sorry, I didnt realize i hadnt mentioned what car i have.

I have a 2006 Lexus GS300

Hello all! do i need to remove my bumper to get to the parking assist sensors?

My wife backed into a pole and hit the right rear bumper a while ago (yea i really dont know how when the parking assist was on lol) which in turn messed up the parking assist i believe.. and the now the "CHECK SONAR" light comes on and beeps. I wanted to replace the parking assist sensor but realized it might just be loose since the area of the bumper did get bumped. Is it possible to reach this and see if its loose without removing the bumper?

Any advice or input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I was just able to get underneath the back bumper and saw that the sensor is indeed broken. I cant reach my arm behind there due to the muffler so it looks like i have to remove the bumper completely. Does anybody have a guide or know how to remove the bumper?

Even when they work optimally they seem useless. My sonar sensors would activate when I’m in the drive thru behind another vehicle. Not to mention the rear back up camera totally going BLANK just to show you the lazy graphics of the sonar. I keep mine turned off.

Slightly off topic, but I thought I'd share this: So I just bought a 2007 GS 450h, and it was having some random issue w/ the Park Assist where it always thought that there was an obstruction in front, even when nothing was in front at all. There were no error codes or anything popping up though, so I had no clue what was causing it. I eventually just turned it off and told myself that maybe I'd get it checked out at a Lexus dealer sometime. Here's where it is interesting though, so a few days ago, I decided to upgrade the DVD nav maps to the latest (2017) map pack, as part of this, i noticed that it was updating the software, and I don't know why, but out of a hunch, after the update, I decided to try the Park Assist again.

What do you know? Working perfectly now. Not only that @Propulsion, you may be interested to know that now, when you're in reverse, the park assist does not take over your backup camera, it instead has a little icon in the top right corner now that shows a mini-version of the park assist sensors.

YMMV, but thought I'd share. Cheers all.

Most likely you have a bad sensor that comes and goes like what mine does. Certain times when the weather is hot they will act up, for me its one of the square ones on the front bumper so it shows theres obstruction in the front of the car.

I did this experiments when the sensors are going crazy, have someone sit in the drivers seat while the car is in drive and their foot on the brake. Tap/smack on each parking sensor that relate to the signal from your screen and take a few steps back after hitting each one, you want to see if that after smacking the sensor it fixes itself. If it does fixes itself then know that the last sensor you hit is the bad one and needs to be replaced. Or atleast torn apart and inspected

@ibidu1 Thanks for the tip! I'll have to check mine with that technique next time it goes flaky on me. Have you tried replacing or rebuilding one yourself? Any tips you can share?

No I have not replaced nor repaired my sensors as they either work on and off. Sometimes they will work flawless, but at times when the weather is hot one sensor will go nuts. Also when it rains or after a car wash it will give issues.

One of these days I need to remove the bumper to replace the bad sensor. They do make aftermarket sensors on ebay that are very cheap, never tried them. I do remember a member has tried a pair but didnt gives his feedback on how well they preformed.
