GS460 1U V8 Oil Use
Interested in other owners chiming in here.
Bought Mobil1 0-20W EP Synthetic oil and a Toyota filter.
What are you 460 (1U) owners using?

I'm lazy and take it to the stealership for the oil changes now, so I believe Castrol is what's used. Mobil 1 and Liqui Moly are my personal go-to's when I used to change it myself. All synthetic, of course.

I've always used 5w-20 in my 460, and that's what I now have the dealership use. Never had any issues, and as tghw said, it's simply to improve fuel economy, which I personally couldn't care less about when it comes to protecting my engine long term. I'm sure 0w-20 is just fine, but my vote goes to 5w-20.

Viscosity ratings have changed in conjunction with engine technology. Manufacturers have improved on reducing bearing drag while increasing power. Oil like 0-20 deliver that tighter tolerance level previous engine design weren’t needed.
A major oil demand has to to with VVT ie. Oil viscosity is critical to a sophisticated electronic valve control. That is why it really is important to use what Toyota specifies.
I’m also not telling anyone what to use, just prefer to stay with manufacturers recommendation on this one considering such sophisticated equipment

my dealership always writes me up at $50 but then always come back and end up charging me $80 because I have a 460 and they always put me in as a 350 because apparently I'm one of two people who has ever brought a 460 to my dealer

I believe the recommended viscosity is 5W-20 not 0. Anyway, the first number is for cold temp, and here in TX it's not that cold even in the winter, so 5 is sufficient. I have been using Mobil 1 full synthetic on mine since new, and it has 175k now still running like new. I buy OEM oil filters from some dealer seller on Amazon for $4.50 each, and the washers from fleebay.

Kev, I believe in individualism, the reason why car calls for 0-20 W oil is all Toyota.
Engineering has more to do with recommendations than temperatures.
460’s use oil pressure to adjust valve timing. So changing the oil W can be hurting performance and not merely for surface lubricant qualities
The owners manual truly recommends 0-20w.
Choosing oil outside of recommendations isn’t unheard of but it will effect valve timing
