Default How do I check for codes for with an OBDII?

So i was cleaning the house and found a OBDII I was wondering how I can use it. any ideas?
Would the car still give me codes even if there is no check engine light?

Just plug the scanner into the OBD II port under the dash and put the car into ACC/Power position (car not started). The OBD II should have an option to read the code.

And yes, there could be a code without the CEL on.

No you probably have to download a program like torque or something similar to read the codes on your phone or computer.
