buy it or keep looking???
hey guys, so im looking at getting a first car, (im 16) whats your thinking on this 2006 gs300?? i mean it needs some work, its priced at 9,650 i personally think thats a little high for the price, but what do u guys think? it needs the following work
"***THIS VEHICLE DID NOT PASS VIRGINIA STATE SAFETY INSPECTION DUE TO: RIGHT HEADLIGHT BULB OUT. THIS VEHICLE DID NOT PASS VIRGINIA EMISSIONS TEST DUE TO: CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED (CODES P0138 - OXYGEN SENSOR #2 ON BANK 1; P0430 - CATALYTIC CONVERTER; P0200 & P0600 - MISFIRE IN CYLINDERS #2 & #6)."
and heres the link to it http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-s...91470567&Log=0
so tell me what should be a good price to negotiate, and also if u guys know how much it would be to fix myself that price would be helpful to! thnx!

Stay away from the 06 gs300... from my research they have more problems than 07+ and for that price, unless you have money to spare it might have costly repairs that are needed.
I am not familiar with those error codes but I wouldn't take the chance personally, I would keep looking for a v8.

Stay away. Lexus are excellent until they go wrong-then they are very expensive. Buying a car with known trouble is not wise. Sounds a bit high as well. If seller would agree to fix all problems and get it through Virginia inspection, then maybe. Machog

Forget the 3rd Gen GS. If you only have around $10K to spend, you probably shouldn't be looking at a Lexus. You'll have to get one so old it is bound to require expensive repair. But if you must, maybe an early LS 430 would be a better bet. The 3GS just isn't really turning out to be a great high mileage car, like the earlier Lexus models.
There are too many issues with the Direct Injection engines, yes, even the 3.5. Some GS 350 owners like to taunt us stupid GS 300 owners for having the oil burning, weak sauce motor. But I've seen plenty of serious mechanical issues posted online from unhappy GS 350 owners. Just stay away. Get a Honda Accord or something.

Here we go....seems like you are reaching to get a car you can't really afford. These cars are problematic enough as it is without current issues. I'd never buy one without a warranty...but if you have to get one I would look for 08 or newer...

Those codes practically add up to about 8k worth of work...you probably need the engine re-ringed and might need new cats too...do not look back....run as far away as you can...

i would not buy something that already has multiple issues. I'm new to the Lexus brand but from what I've read about the 3gen GS's...I'm already a bit worried that I'll end up putting more $$$$ into this thing long term that what I've been accustomed to doing with my Honda's. That said...I can afford to put some $$$ into my cars but still...I'm cheap, lol and would rather not HAVE to. If I were you and on that budget...I'd go find a one owner, well maintained Honda Accord and have a lot less headache/worry. Certainly not nearly as "cool"....but at this point in your life...go for "reliable" and "low cost to maintain". Honda's fit that bill.
I've got an 03' V6 Accord EX loaded, that I bought back in 07' or 08' with 73k miles on it for $13,500. Now, it's got just under 300k miles and it's been cheap to keep on the road. I did have to put a tranny in it at 258k miles...which cost @$2700 but other than than...just basic timing belts, water pump, alternator, spark plugs, tires, brakes, etc. No electrical, no motor problems. In fact everything on this car works still....from the sunroof, to the heated seats, to the 5 disc CD player, etc. A LOT of the maintenance can be done yourself with DIY tutorials available on forums like this or youtube.

I have a 2006 GS 300 AWD with ML, the one you are looking at seems equipped the same. I bought it new in 2005 and I have never had an issue with it, just oil changes and tire rotation. I do have low mileage on it but is has been a very reliable car. I would look at the kbb.com price and deduct what the repairs would cost. Then make an offer.
