2006 GS430 -- rear brake calipers seized? CPO?
 

Hey guys. 2006 GS430, CPO warranty for another year or so.

My car is at the dealership now for an oil change. I got a call that I need new rear brakes (they are down to 3mm). However, they can't change them because the inside pins of the rear calipers are seized and need to be replaced. They are quoting me $275 for each side, plus an hour of labor, so about $700. They said they might be able to unseize the pins by heating them up, but they're not optimistic.

Are seized brake calipers covered under the CPO warranty? It's definitely not normal wear and tear. It's the failure of a mechanical part. I just don't know enough about the issue or the CPO warranty to know whether it's something that would be covered.

Does anyone know? I have a message in to my service advisor and am waiting to hear back.

I was a service writer for Lexus for 12 years. In a short answer, Yes. If the vehicle is C.P.O through Lexus Extra care then they will cover parts and labor for the caliper but they most likely will not purchase the pads. If the Dealer says Extra care will not cover it then I would ask for the extra care phone number to speak with them. Brakes are a wearable item but calipers being seized is not. Hope this helps

I received a call back a little while ago from Lexus. The calipers are covered under CPO, which was great to hear. The pads, of course, are not covered, which is to be expected.

You need to have your brakes serviced once in a while which should include relubricating the slider pins, shouldn't that have prevented this from happening?

Well, I changed the brake fluid at 60k miles, and I had the front pads and rotors changed last year. They inspected the rear brakes, but I guess they never lubricated the slider pins?
