the 4gs ml system is 835watts, but the ml reference system in the ls is 450watts iirc.
watts "helps" but it doesn't really dictate how good a system is. if you want a system that can go very loud and boom down the whole street, sure, you need more wattage. but if you want a system that sounds great, crispy, balanced, etc... it's really about a lot of other factors like amp, acoustics, speakers, etc... the power isn't high up on the list. it's just a marketing thing that has got a lot of people thinking the higher the power, the better it is.
in competition systems, there are some winning systems in the 200 watts range that will blow a lot of other systems out of the water.
and by comparison, the 4gs ml system sounds pretty good and noticeably step up from the regular premium audio. the difference is far more than that in the 3gs. and imho the 4gs and ls ml systems sound pretty close, though i think the ls one still sounds better. could be that the ls has better insulation too. and that also shows how wattage doesn't play that big of a factor

"Thanks to the use of Bang & Olufsen’s proprietary ICEpower technology the system produces a total amplifier power of 1.348 watts at only 1% distortion (equals 1.460 watts at the usual 10% automotive distortion specification)."
If a car is $100K,what's another $6300 list for the B&O system.

I really like my ML in my 3GS. The sub isnt the best as it seems to be a little on the cheaper side but the rest sounds fine. I havent heard the LS yet so cant campare the two of them lol
