Default What Exactly is the "S Mode"

Hey guys,

I have an idea what the s mode MIGHT be. Im assuming its a mode where it allows you to dictate which gear you want while still being semi automatic.

My question is, will using s mode maximize fuel economy or is it less efficient than letting the car decide when to switch gears and what not (automatic).

Another reason why I ask is because while the car is quick, it seems as though it lags in the first, second and third gear. If possible i wanted to shift into a higher gear before hitting 3000 on first gear, second and third.

Let me know if any of this makes sense. First time i even had a "faux manual" so im a bit new to all this.

btw, my vehicle is a 08 gs350.

S mode is useful going downhill to use engine braking rather than riding the brakes to control speed.
It'll also let you use the full rpm whereas the Sport mode switch will just let the car hang on to gears a bit longer before automatically shifting to the next one, in D mode.
If you're wanting to shift earlier, make sure the switch is set to ECT or jerk your foot off the throttle (if it already is), that'll get it to switch through the gears a bit quicker.
Have a read of your owner manual - info in there which may be useful to absorb.

doesn't using a "downshift" method destroy your trans in the long run? I know my civic's manual trans took a dookie on me (D16 series) when i started playing with downshifting.... Same thing with my miata, had to get a whole new trans for the noise to go away unfortunately.

Sport mode hangs on to gears a bit longer depending ond driving style. Also downshifts happen sooner depending on throttle input. I usually switch to sport when I am alone, because downshifts could be a bit abrupt sometimes and it might look like I am having too much fun to others.
Sport mode is awesome.
