Alternator noise and then dead
My 2000 RX300 has 196k on it. It suddenly developed squeaky noises several months ago. First thought the noise was from drive belts. After timing belt replacement, the noise remained and the Toyota dealer asked me to wait some time to let the new belt break-in. Last week, the noise got much worse, and then this morning, the Battery Discharge Warning Light was on. Engine stopped right away when I unplugged the battery connector and hence proved the alternator went bad. Drived the car to a shop across the street to have a new alternator installed. The annoying noise is completely gone. So, pay attention to unusual noise, it may not be from the belt but a sign of dying alternator.

I have a spare alternator in the garage. It doesn't appear to be too difficult of a job on these cars, remove the belt, remove the idler pulley, a couple of bolts and it's off.
Granted I still barely have 70K miles on this car, so if it lasts to 120K I probably will never need it hehe.

Pretty amazing, I had an Acura where the alt lasted 159k (until I sold it, it was still running).
MY GS hasn't had an issue, I just needed more amperage, so I swapped out.
This car is really really stupid easy to change the alt, like BinaryJay said. I sat there slapping my forehead over it because I paid someone $129 to change it out for me.

I changed out the alt. myself.
This site once saved us $$$. The RX300 died on the road and would not run
for more than about 5 minutes. Got it home. Found an incredible fix on this site. Remove a clamp, move
air delivery (nomenclature?), two bolts, Spray the (can't remember it's name) with carb and choke cleaner.
Reassembled. the RX300 started and has run perfectly for almost another 150K miles. amazing!
