Default 2006 GS430 Timing Belt service

I'm at 73k miles, and will probably get my timing belt changed before 80k.

I am scarred from owning a Honda and having the timing belt snap on me and losing my engine.

My question is, aside from the timing belt, what else do I need to have changed? And what company does Lexus use for their original timing belt?

From searching, I'm seeing multiple answers...

So far, what I think I need to get changed at the same time is timing belt, idler pulley&idler bearing for timing belt, water pump, tensioner bearing...

Do I need to change thermostat? I'm just fearful of getting everything done possible to avoid a timing belt snap and a ruined Lexus engine.

get everything listed and the thermostat. but at 80k you are in NO danger at all. worry when you have 200k on stock belt, do a search no one has ever broken one and ill doubt youd be the first. i know of cars with over 180k on stock belt. i would still replace it but if it were me id wait till 105k or so

That is completely inaccurate... sure people have gone ridiculous miles on the stock belt, but I have personally seen at least 3 Toyota motors (V6 and V8's) with worn out timing belts. One was interference and had to have a valve job, the others have all been non-interference motors and a simple timing belt change took care of it...

The belts don't break - the rubber gets brittle and the teeth are sheared off of the belt itself...

I have seen countless other makes with bad timing belts... When we get a car towed in that died on the road while driving and will crank but not start, we make bets on what the issue is.. about 20% of the time, it is a timing belt issue...

90k is the suggested interval on most Toyota's, double check yours, and get it done at that time, but I wouldn't worry prior to that...

Belt, water pump, crank seal.

And it's not just mileage, after 6 years belts should be replaced just on rubber age alone.

430 is belt (same engine as previous Gen) 460 changed to chain, like the 300 (inline to vee design) and 350 (whole new design?)
Not sure if different in other markets, but UK/Europe is 100K or 10 years recommended change interval.

every car is different im not going to go into my skill level but a 30yr tech would ask me how to fix a car. so im probably in top 5% of the best in the world. the gs430/ls430 specifically not talking about any other make or model! will go easily 180k on a stock belt. a vw/audi with a stock belt most times will fail 10k early. each specific car has its own set of rules. if you dont belive me do a search for failed ls 430 or gs 430 timing belts and then put all your supportting facts in this post and good luck you wont find a thing.

also if you have a failed water pump or cam seals which are leaking oil on to the belt then of course it will degraded the belt and in that case it will fail and need to replaced when the leaks are fixed.

You are 100% correct, but with the cost of head, valve train and probable piston repair, why chance it.

just was saying no need to rush into it 20k early like something catastrophic is looming.

I know this is for a GS430, but I had the same question about belt/chain since I just bought my GS300 couple hundred miles shy of 100k. Looked up the engine code, then googled it, and came up with this link:

http://www.mr2.com/files/mr2/techinf...a/3grfse-2.pdf

On the left, click Timing Chain, and you'll confirm your doubts. Hope this helps!

Sorry if I wasn't clear - that was what my post stated.
The 300 changed to chain as a result of changing from an inline to a vee configuration.
The 350 was a new design, iirc, so it was naturally going to follow the industry trend of chains being used.
Honda did it on the Accord/TSX back in 03, and BMW had it on the E65/66 7 Series in 02.

OK, so at the 90k maintenance mark, change out:

1.) Timing Belt
2.) Water Pump
3.) Crankshaft Seal
4.) Idler Pulley
5.) Idler Bearing
6.) Tensioner Bearing
7.) Thermostat

Am I missing anything critical?
