Yes the PS3 was not the true successor to the PS2. It offers improved rain performance, but at the expense of dry performance and crisp handling. It really is a tire marketed to monsoon climates like in Asia. It hasn't been pushed much in the US.
The Michelin PSS (Pilot Super Sports) are being positioned as the successor of the PS2.

T1R is good; PS2's are better. The Continental DWS seems promising 580AA treadwear FTW! 
The Pzero's aren't the most grippy either. I've spun a 2006 STi out in the wet with them

To address the sidewall issue it is always best to buy XL load factor tires.

i mean, everything depends on your driving, but i have them on my m3, and i drive "ok" i guess. my car is at 24k mark, i am on my 3rd set i think
