We have a 06 GS 300 AWD, and other than a couple of annoying rattles - since pretty much fixed, it has been bulletproof. There have been some TSB's, but excpet for those, all we've done is routine maintenance. I do not see where, other then unproven rumor, and plain BS, there is any less reliability with the GS AWD, then with the IS. BTW, just FYI, the IS suffers from rattles too.

I have both and would recommend the GS. The IS is nice, but I noticed 90% of them are driven by females. No need to worry about vibrations if your father has no intentions of lowering the vehicle. After seeing all these pictures with cars covered in snow, I now see the reasoning behind making the GS AWD higher that the RWD.

Who cares if indeed 90% of the 2ISs are driven by females?

As a benchmark, I ended up purchasing my '06 GS300RWD from an independent dealer. This car was previously on a Lexus dealers lot for $6,000 more than I paid, and that was less than 30 days after the Lexus dealer was trying to sell it "CPO". The difference was the "CPO" moniker, which is marketing at it's best, except for smart buyers who see right through it. I can purchase a Lexus factory extended warranty for less than 1/3'rd of that $6,000 differential if I need that peace of mind, though I don't think I will be buying one. In any event, if you buy it from a Lexus dealer CPO, consider that CPO to them means "Certified Price Optimimzed" for their profit margin. They didn't get the name "stealerships" for nothing!

Picked up a 2006 GS300 CPO 45K miles for $24,900.00 Like a lot of GS owners it had a dash rattle. Took it back and is now good. I hope.
