Default 2006 gs430 check vsc / traction

okay so i was driving last night, not ripping it or anything, check vsc displayed on the message center as well as the check engine light and the one next to it, also the traction off light was on

theres no loss in power, nothing of that nature, i put gas in my car on saturday... so i instantly figured it might be something to do with the gas cap... i took it off, tightened it back up and hopefully this is the problem.

I have 2 questions:
my gas cap is black with white writing on it, i believe this is the older one right?

how long until the light "should" clear itself, and if it doesnt clear what else can i check?

its more than likely your gas cap. when you take it off, does it only take about a 1/4 turn before it comes off? if so the O ring is bad. if not, then you probably could have just not tightened it all the way. it might take a couple days to clear.

yeah when i take the gas cap off, its really easy for about the first 1/4 turn, and then its just minimal force and it comes right off

my cousin has an obd2 scanner so i'm going to go there today after work to check... anyone know which code in particular should come up if its gas cap????

i was tripping on the way to work today because my MPG dropped 2mpg, but thats probably just because the check vsc turns off traction and what not... right?

Does anyone know how long it takes for a code to come back if it were a problem? Someone told me that it could just be a glitch and to tighten up my gas cap and reset the code...

i did that and it hasn't come back YET, been 2 days so far, driven about 400 miles

so the code came back again today, however i instantly went to my gas cap and now its completely loose... it requires NO effort at all to remove the gas cap... going to replace the cap and then clear the code.... hoping that's all it is

I put a new gascap in, and this time about 20 minutes later the check vsc problem is back
i ran the code and it's the same one:
P0420 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)

what else could this be? o2 sensors or cat?

p0420, p0430 are normally always a bad cat or leak in exhaust near post o2 sensors
If it was the gas cap you would get a evap code like p0455

Silent is right, I have ran my tundra past 200k miles... ran like a tank and the only code that pops is a p0420. I wouldn't know the mileage of your car but its more or less either of the catalytic converter or bad O2 sensor. The cats run over a grand from the dealer and a 150 less from a third party like a exhaust shop.

My gs is about 117k so I'm good for an extra 80k miles till it poops on me. I'll even preserve it longer by purchasing megan test pipes & o2 foulers when I comeback from Japan.

I can see this thread has been revived by lexsmeks, maybe the snow you've mentioned rusted out the old cats and overtime pooped on you. Like any issue, troubleshoot it first before making any decisions. Goodluck.

Hi all,

I have the same issue (Check VCS / Engine / Traction Off) on my 2006 GS 430.

I just did an OBD scan, which resulted in: P0455 & P0456 trouble codes.

Based on what I have read, I hope this is just an issue with my gas cap. The original one did seem to come off easy with 1/4 of a turn. I replaced the gas cap with a generic brand that fits my car. Its now been 3 days and the lights are still on.

Do you think its necessary to buy a new Lexus OEM gas cap? The OEM one is $50 CAD, but I cheaped out and bought the generic brand from an auto parts store for $15.

Lexus dealer obviously recommended getting OEM and they said it would take a week to clear the warning lights. I am trying to solve this issue asap as I am currently trying to sell the car.

Should I just buy the OEM gas cap and wait up to a week, or do you think the generic gas cap should be fine and I just need to be more patient?

Thanks for your advice.
