I had the k40 calibre and i think its ok nothing crazy great about it... i think its just a high-dollar radar that doesn't perform that well for all that money you pay for it.

It's quite telling that K40 has a policy of suing any online radar detector forums where members may discuss or review their products. See attached link:
http://www.radardetector.net/forums/...html#post56683

I would not use a K40 for that and other reasons:

1) It does not use GPS to block out false signals and to provide warnings of speed cameras, red light cameras and speedtraps.

2) It has no meter to tell you signal strength or signal frequency (i.e. the voice announcement will say K band, but you won't know whether it is 24.150 which is where a properly calibrated radar gun should be, or 24.200 which is most likely Mercedes Benz radar cruise control).

3) k40 uses wireless technology. While we don't know how theirs performs, other vendors have found wireless is not reliable which is why Valentine One does not use it, nor does Escort for high end products.

4) There are no objective tests of the jammers by any independent testing group. However in tests that have been conducted such as guys of lidar, only Laser Interceptor, Antilaser G8 and Blinder seem to make effective jammers. I have the Laser Interceptor - and having tested it with with against Prolaser 2, Prolaser 3 and Laser Atlanta guns my car is unreadable.

5) Their ban on reviews suggests that they are not comfortable being compared to others.

That is beyond lame. I would not give a company that forbids discussion about it's products a red cent. Not that any kind of radar/laser detection or jamming equipment is legal here. I don't have speeding ticket problems so that's okay with me, you guys must have some serious lead foots to blow thousands of dollars on these detection systems when seem to get obsoleted on a fairly regular basis.

Wait, by discussing this here, are we breaking any laws. :P

Yeah I am a bit of a lead foot. But my driving license is clean. The municipalities here are really trying to get more money from tickets, so if you want to do any more than speed limit + ten (e.g. driving above 65mph on I-95, then something like this is critical). I probably get around 3 or 4 "saves" a month.

Valentine One is a very good radar detector. But if you live in an area like Atlanta and Northern Atlanta, then any radar detector will save you at best 40% of the time. Most cops in cities with well funded police departments are shooting laser. Plus the Valentine One won't help you with speed cameras either.

I love my 9500ix

And here you were giving me crap for having 5% tint. Here you are speeding all over the place!

Yes but this is why I was suggesting you reconsider the tint. Radar detector or not (9500ix is a good one) there are a few rules which are useful for staying out of trouble:
1) Safety first. Spend time on a track. Understand what the car can and can't do. Also never make assumptions about what other drivers will do - there are a lot of stupid people who can cut you off at any time. Safety is the first priority of a Stealth driver.
2) Have an inconspicuous car. Owning a car which Police regard as an older gentleman's car and not a boy racer's car. This is one of the many reasons I stopped driving BMWs and started driving Lexus.
3) Leaving my car looking stock to not attract attention. Flashy modifications lead the cops to think this is a young boy racer, not a conservative older gentleman. Especially very low suspension, flashy after market wheels, extra spoilers, body kits and tints. (I don't mean offense by this but I do know that this is how cops perceive it).
4) Ensuring maximum visibility - if you are speeding you need 100% visibility. Having 5% visible light at night just won't cut it. A cop could sneak up on you and pace you and you would not see him. This also means turning off the self-dimming rear view mirror. I also don't listen to music while driving fast because I need to have maximum alertness and be able to hear other cars as well as my own car.
5) Follow the Driver's Code. If you search around the web, you will find there is a code which tells you where to speed, where to slow down, how to handle on overpasses, hills, curves, night driving, long distance trips, what road markers to pay attention to etc. I for instance can notice from yellow reflective markers on the inside barrier that a mobile speed camera van in Phoenix might be operating on a stretch of road.

I'm still ticket free and I have had lots and lots of saves from the Laser Interceptor. It's a great product.

Make sure it is installed properly. I tested mine after the initial install against a rented lidar gun and noticed that my back coverage was weak. adjusted it and then it was flawless.

Key is sensors must be level to the road, and point straight along the axis of the road.

cool man....any kind of level u recommend....seeing that the sensors are so small....sounds like i need a laser level to point at the wall to mark....measure and make sure they are square....?

AND.....another thing....i was thinking of getting the high powered dual kit...or do u think getting the low powered quad will do the trick...i think almost all reading from cops come from the front and thats why i was thinking of getting high powered duals for the front.

Are you driving a GS? I find the Regular works fine on my car. HPs are quite a bit more powerful and will probably give you better assurance of protection from all directions. I drive in a very flat state so angles are usually not an issue for me.

You are right - most shots are from front. I have only once been shot from rear and that was in Atlanta on GA 400 where they quite often hang out on on-ramps.

So you're call. If it was a BMW I'd definitely recommend HPs.

Basically cars with big headlights, lots of chrome and light colors are harder to protect. A white BMW would be terrible. I have a Black GS. GS has small headlights, black grille with small chrome surround, and the car is black. Black doesn't reflect lidar, so regular LIs are fine.
