Great write up OP and additional information from everyone else.
What does the dealer normally use? regular or synthetic?
This will be my first time changing the oil on an 09 rwd which was previously dealer maintained.

I'm not sure whether all of them use synthetic though I suspect that they do. I confirmed that Germain Lexus, where I purchased mine uses full synthetic in all of their Lexus services. At least that is what I was told. I've acquired all of the tools (for the canister filter), but havent changed yet because it is not duem

Thank you for reading my mind. I was thinking about doing this on my own from now on and with your detail post with pic, I can now make sure I do it right. Thank you for the great post and step by step process.

I'll use either Mobil 1 or Valvoline full synthetic -- whichever is cheaper at the Walmartz. Sometimes O'reilly's will match Walmartz price but no one beats it!

so the oil change was finally due and much thanks for the tutorial!. For those who wonder why some of us change their own oil, on my 2007 (which now has a whopping 45K mi on it!) only 2 of the 6 or 7 screws on the little access cover weren't stripped out! I'll need to get some new clips! Mechanics are notorious for over-tightening, stripping threads, and otherwise not following the procedures. I don't know how many cars I've worked on that have had missing hardware. This Lexus was only worked on my Lexus dealers (had a friend pull the records), so my guess is even though it went to a Lexus dealer. It seems like a small thing, but I like to have things done right on my car -- especially one I plan on keeping for the duration!

Default Using funnel below filter... no spills

Changed oil in my cousins 13 GS350 today. Loosened filter housing little bit. Stuck a wide-mouth funnel under it. Wedged between axle and tilted a bit. Loosened it more. Oil drained right into drain pan below. No spills.

This was the cleanest and easiest oil change as compared to our other cars (toyotas, hondas). Not single drop/spill. I had standard drain pan (bigger one broke) so had to stop once in the middle and put back the drain bolt to avoid overfill. Then continue again. Other than that one stop, very smooth.

Had to find out how to reset the oil reminder.... Looked up in youtube. Going through NAV screen, did not reset the reminder. It was just a reminder entry. Had to do it on the dash controls...

Proc: On position, no start. Press Trip A. Off. Press and hold trip A and press start (no ignition). Reading says Resetting.... few seconds later displays 00000s. Done.

By the way, Mobil 1 rebate ends Oct 31. Used Mobil 1 0w20 with Mobil 1 filter M1C-256.

I was using the Castrol Gold synthetic for years in the wife's GS350. Was topping off less than a quart every 1,000 miles. Last change I used the new Castrol full syn high mileage in the black jug. The car hit 1,000 miles and still was full. there are no seal leaks so I know the car was burning the oil. I will continue to use this oil.

I use either Mobil 1, Castrol, or Valvoline. Either sale or rebate is the deciding factor. Right now Mobil 1 has a rebate. I sometimes use the new Penzoil synthetic if I wanted a bit more detergent cleaning power. I do not use that always but if there is a rebate, I would get it.

If you reset the one on the navigation system and not the one on the dash screen, will you receive a message one the nav screen to contact dealer for maintenance? I recently changed the oil and set reminder, but didn't reset the oil maintenance required on the dash read out because it hadn't prompted me yet. Just curious if that is why i'm getting that message.

Default Yes you can

Contrary to popular belief you can switch from conventional to FS and back again if you so desire.
