Lexus has been unconcerned about the GS for a while now and this is just the latest iteration. It's the lame duck of Lexus. The ES is their bread and butter sedan, IS is the sporty entry sedan, and the LS is their showcase and everything that they stand for.

Make no mistake about it, this car isn't important to them. The ES is the same size and pulls in many of the same clientele based on that alone, and they sell a hell of a lot more of them.

2006 was a joke with engines, and yet again Lexus has shown that they are not concerned with making this car competitive within it's segment. I almost feel like it's a viscous cycle...they pay the least attention to the GS because it's the lowest volume...but it's the lowest volume because they pay so little attention to the car that it fails to be as competitive as the class leaders. This car is dying on the vine, and I don't know how they think they can get another 3-4 years out of this bodystyle.

I guess we can all start dreaming about the redesign, but if history repeats itself, I wouldn't hold my breath.

SAD DAY FOR GS

So we pay 60K for a V8 power car and will not get Direct Injection engine which is available In IS350 ( even though it is a v6 ). GS is getting step brother treatment when compared to LS. We were expecting atleast 382 hp . Very poor decision by Lexus Executives. I was very eagerly looking to buy GS460 next year now I will look at GS450H.

WTH, the GS430 had more hp than the LS430, I thought that was going to continue, but why the lower hp with the GS460?

I was planning on upgrading my GS to an 08,but I think I will search out an '07 350,too bad my dealer only has a starfire/beige left over.I may have to call around to find a GFM/ash full loaded

The '08 just does not do it for me.

I'll be an optimist here and say, maybe like certain franchises, every other one is a big hit. 1GS was a smaller affair, 2GS was very successful, 3GS seems to be in between, actually matching 2GS sales but not growing it that much more. Maybe 4GS will see the return of "Something Wicked This Way Comes."

I did post a speculative thread when the 5ES came out, and it seemed that they had a pattern of design every-other then as well. Difference is, the ES has been a big hit every time, except the 1ES.

From the bean counters perspective the minimal changes makes sense. They appear to be content to have the GS V8 engine improved, but no extra effort. The exterior changes are also minimal, but they do add a bit to the first L-finesse design.

The Catch-22 about the GS is well-put. IMO until Lexus fully resolves the ES vs. GS conundrum the GS will remain more of a niche vehicle.

Now my question is, why? re: the 342 hp V8. I'd like to hear an official explanation, or at least from official sources. Someone speculated elsewhere that it was to pay for the cost of the 1UR-FE development. Or perhaps to pay for the GS development. Or is there some fitment issue with the GS? And is there direct injection or not? The press releases remain confusing.

I would take a stab that Lexus doesn't want the GS460 to totally outperform the GS450h with the 380 or more hp

I am so disapointed. The car (well with new EPA ratings) has dismal gas mileage. Would have been fine with 380hp, not 342.

Magazines ALREADY HAVE the GS 350 doing 0-60 in the low to mid 5s. If the GS 460 cannot beat that, it is redundant.

Lexus is not trying hard enough with the GS. Very sad.
i am still a bit in disbelief. if this is true, then i really have no idea what lexu sis thinking with this silly 342hp engine for the gs460. it's overlap with the gs450h and it eats more gas. you do get a larger trunk but that's not enough to justify it existence.

the gs460 is 17/24 on gas mileage. the ls460 has 40 more horses and still rated 16/24. wtf...... not to mention a lot of gs owners they get more than 24mpg in real life. i really don't see why they want to detune the engine

then why even bother to have the car that performs pretty much the same as the gs450h though?

Yes, add that to the list of possible reasons. Why would Lexus keep the GS 460 V8 from operating at its fullest potential? The GS 450h has proven to be a niche car...The RX 350 output pretty much matched the RX 400h...

Perhaps it is this policy of 'hybrid car must be the most powerful'?

I'm shocked.

The "sportier" GS460 is about 40 hp less than the more "barge-like" LS460...

heh wow...kinda is sad that they didn't at least match the 380hp from the same engine as the LS460...oh well...I don't think I'll be getting a GS460...price is probably 60k ish and I think I would just get an IS-F for hopefully less than 60k...

in that case shouldnt they make a LS600??? 6.0 liter v12? NVM it would probably have the same HP anyway lol
