Default auto-stick question...not sure how it works

Can anyone with a GS350 tell me what gear is automatically in when you shift to manual shift?

I am always in 4 th gear, whether I'm going 80mph or at stoplight. My friend's TL shifts according to the gear he is in. And I find it odd that it has torque to move from a dead stop. It seems that the auto-stick is still driving me....

Forgive me... I came from driving manual cars and I haven't fully tested my car to its potential, still in break-in period - 725mi...waiting for that 1000miles (full breakin - yeah baby)

I had mine for a week and I thought it was odd too, until I read the manual.

yeah it's weird that way. you just flip in into S mode and then it defaults to that gear to be safe i guess. you have to downshift if you are at a stoplight, which is annoying since it's sequential only and you have to shift a couple times to get it to 1st. no skipping of gears.

and when you drive and the gear is displayed, that just means it is saying that gear is the highest it will go. so if it displays 4 and you are at a stoplight and then go on the green, it still goes 1-2-3-4 (you can feel it doing it's own thing). similarly, when you slow down, it will downshift for you, but will still display 4 if you don't manually downshift the ****.

that is the normal behavior unfortunately.

So when it does its thing, say 1-2-3-4, does it continue to 5th gear or go into higher RPM at that point?? When does it detect when you are no actively shifting...3000rpm / 6000rpm??

Also, when I was test driving @ the dealership...they said to lift your foot as if you were shifting with a clutch. Someone else told me to just floor it and shift on the go.

Which is preferred?

Whatever the highest gear number selected, that will be the highest point the car will upshift to. The Sport Shift mode is really great for holding a gear or downshifting. So for example, you leave the Sport Shift indicator to lets say gear# [4], from a complete stop, you can accellerate normally and it will upshift to the next highest gear at it's normal shift pattern up to Gear# 4 or whatever gear you select. It will hold that gear of choice until you hit rev limiter. There is no detection of when it will upshift at a certain RPM in Sport Shift Mode, it will just upshift normally to the highest gear # you select if you are just accellerating like in the D position.

Also, when I was test driving @ the dealership...they said to lift your foot as if you were shifting with a clutch. Someone else told me to just floor it and shift on the go.
Lifting your foot as if you are shifting with a clutch is FALSE. All that does is confuse the tranny and upshifting late into its shift sequence. It's an automatic gearbox, just mash the pedal and upshift/downshift accordingly. No need to let go of the gas.
