Rear differential
 

I just recently today had my rear differential go out on my gs430 it started making popping noise when i put it in reverse for a couple weeks but today when i went to take off it popped hard and just wouldnt move and it made a weird whinning noise like the trans was spinning but not grabbing anything.....is it a hard to remove and replace? Can i use one from an ls or sc since its the same engine and trans ? Is there anything new i need to buy in order to install a used one from the junkyard ?.....thanks in advanced this is stressfull

So i can put a 03 LS430 differential someone at a junk yard is telling me that it wont fit but idk why if its the same engine and trans setting

Do some research but it looks like the LS430 diff will bolt up from a quick google search. You will need to change the diff flange if you use a GS300 or SC300 diff. They are slightly smaller than the 400, 430 or aristo flanges

LS430 should bolt right up no modifications needed.

Not a problem. I have a GS400 with an aristo diff in it and its way faster than the stock diff

Hey, I'm new to this site and I just thought i'd jump on and try to find some info on my GS 400 rear diff. Had to put it in the shop after weeks of intermittent grinding noises that got progressively worse over time. Just got news that there were metal flakes inside when the shop opened it up during diagnostics. They're saying worst case could be a $2k job (not sure if the car is even worth that honestly), but I'm trying to do whatever I can to save this vehicle for my kid, so price is a factor. Any ideas on who in this community is capable of doing the job in my area (98027)? If there's a way to seek out a skilled mechanic or used parts guy, your help would be much appreciated. I've pulled my diff out in 15 minutes. If you can locate a used one, it is an easy swap. The thing isn't heavy as far as diffs go. You just unbolt the driveshaft, the axles from the sides and let them hang there. They push away far enough. Then the bolts from the back and bottom. A used diff and having someone with basic wrenching skills around should be able to get this done for around $300. Used diff sell for 200-250. I'd do the job for $50. Maybe $100 if I was doing it on my back. Ask around for someone that can help you do it. Look on ebay for a used diff etc. Mobil mechanics on craigslist etc.
