Stock for stock GS430 is better in every way.

They're the exact same same platform but the GS300 has a lame engine and the GS430 has a decently powerful engine. GS300 inherited the essentially useless Sport Shift from the GS400, but that's the only thing it got that the GS430 didn't.

If you want to do 2JZ stuff, then obviously get a car already fitted with a 2JZ.

The best version of this platform for modifying is the Aristo V300, which will be legal in the US in about 5 years.

i’d say neither, a 98-2000 gs400 is the way to go.

This right here, I should have gotten back a 400 instead of getting a 430, but oh well....live and learn.

GS430 all the way, luxurious and thrilling.

And for the strange part, owners report very little difference in gas mileage between the two.

If you want to mod something, get a GS4xx and put a CD009 transmission in it. Colins makes a bolt-up kit. How you deliver the power is just as important as how much power you have, and the stock auto trans sucks all the fun out of this car.

If you have no plans to mod the motor at all then go for the 430. If you want the i6 and think you may want 2j mods down the line, stick with the 300. Want a V8 but still want to do motor mods? Get the 400.

As far as fuel economy goes, its a wash. I commute daily with my 430 (50/50 with plenty of rush hour traffic) and I can manage a hair over 21 mpgs. You wont do much better with the i6.

FWIW I wish I had waited for a clean 400. Like eicca said above, you can swap in the Nissan 6sp manual tranny. You can also piece together a budget m90 supercharger. Basically there are a lot more options as far as modding a 1UZ vs 3UZ.

You need to focus on what purpose the car will serve and decide from there.
