Default troubleshooting - Louder Exhaust under car

A few days ago my car started to develop a louder dull tone to my exhaust. It seems like it is coming from under the car. I doubt I am going to find time to check it myself. Any thoughts of what it could be? I imagine it could be leak, faulty gaskets, or cat pipe before the resonators as I was having a rattling with the heat shield and I imagine that finally developed a hole this past winter.

I would guess it is the y-pipe before the resonators, assuming you have a GS4xx. The heat shields retain moisture causing the pipe to corrode with ensuing holes.

It could be any of those. My exhaust leaks at the muffler flange towards the rear, but my whole exhaust system is pretty crusty at this point.

It is probably where the y pipe meets the headers. Spray some soapy water and look for bubbles.

Yeah, I was thinking it’s the y pipe as well. Had the shop stop the rattling and I had a feeling it wasn’t just gonna rust through. Still has power, just annoying tone now. I’ll pick up a Bosal setup if it’s confimred to be the issue.

I just placed an order for a Megan Down pipe. Didn't want to spend that much on the replacement.

Your down pipe is probably still good but there is just a gasket between that and the y pipe is a common problem on these cars to go bad.

With your Megan down pipe, are you going to run o2 sensor spacers to keep the engine light off for missing catalytic converters?

i dont think so from from what I have read. Not overly worried about it either.

Hope you can let us know how your downpipe install goes. I may be in the market for a new one but I just do not want o2 sensor codes. I heard the o2 spacers will fix that though.

I also ordered a 90 degree O2 spacer since I didn't want the sensor sticking out the way it does with this downpipe. So, I'll gladly let you know how everything turns out once I get it sorted. Won't be until end of March early April.

Quick update - Megan welds were not bad as i was expecting worse. Megan USA rep didnt explain what came in the parcel propely (came with O2 spacer which is short, pair of gaskets front and rear). I thankfully ordered Toyota OEM gaskets since they are better. Megans will leak especially at the Y pipe. No performance issues noticed and no check engine light. Low end power is there, mid range is fine and top end the same. My exhaust is barely louder. It did get quieter due to my leak, but with replacing parts, all is good.
