Going to an auto auction tomorrow and really think the GS300 is the best car for me and my budget. It's not everything I want. I wanted something more modern and sporty. Thats why I ask if the GS 300 is fast? because I keep hearing its more of a cruzer but i'm a young guy 23 and want a practical daliy driver with a little fun.

P.S. do you guys really like the head lights and tail lights? I'm not a fun of the buggy rounded lights. Let me know

but it's a GREAT car with a nearly unbeatable engine and still enough power to be "fun" and satisfying. find a GS 400 if you can, that'll fulfill your speed requirements and be just as reliable.

 

To me its a good daily its not fast but it can move. Its heavy, and most modern v6 will be faster then you lol.

 

No but it's quick enough for a DD. If you want fast, get a motorcycle.

 

Bought it at the auction bidding $3100, and total cost of $4,100 with fees and sales tax. Drove it, put 91 octane gas in it and drove me and my friends through the hills for an afternoon hike.

Happy so far; I have until Monday to return it if I find any mechanical faults with it. So I'm going through it tomorrow with my friend who owns a body shop.

I already noticed I tried to run an OBII scanner on the engine at Auto-Zone, and it didn't read, it just read error. So that a thing I gotta check on. Hopefully, they didn't clear the codes and mess up the computer, or else I'm definitely taking it back.

Comments so far, it is a heavy and bigger car but is responsive. still worried about maneuverability in tight parking or city driving.

Brand new to the Lexus Club, and this car comment with any suggestions or recommendations.

 

Congrats. Good looking car. Not a fast car but as others have stated, dead reliable and comfortable. I wouldnt worry too much about the AutoZone ecu connection failure. Likely user error.

How many miles are on the clock? FYI I purchased one with 200k miles for the purpose of an engine swap, but aside from some oil leakage, the original power train was in excellent working order.

 

Nice, hope it works out for you. Try another OBDII scanner to see if you can get a better connection to communicate with the ECU.

Congrats on your GS3 and welcome to CL!
What model year is it? Take some more pics, including the inside, to show us.
Since you are going to your friend's shop, review the following known areas that may fail on the GS:

1. lower suspension arm # 2 bushing,a.k.a. caster arm bushing
2. lower ball joint
3. shock absorber
4. outer tie rod ends
5. brake caliper, rotor and pads--since you are already there--
6. door power window motor and ecu (mpx)
7. motor and tranny mounts
8. valve cover gaskets and rear main seal (prone to leak oil)
9. servo motors
10. hoses, especially the power steering hose since it may ruin the alternator if it leaks
11. exhaust 'y-pipe'; very common to rust and develop exhaust leak

Of course, general things like spark plugs, belts, hoses, thermostat, fluids, etc. Timing belt and water pump are changed every 90,000 miles; it's an interference engine so it's important.
I'm sure that I am forgetting stuff but I hope this helps you get started.

Just remember, because you do not have obvious symptoms it does not mean parts will not need to be changed. The caster arm comes to mind. No symptoms, looked OK when it was on (Just some superficial cracks, normal for age and mileage) until I removed it. The term loosely goosey came to mind. I would take lextout's advise, specially wanting fast. My 16-year-old car can go from zero to a speeding ticket in under 6 seconds!

 

I've taken it around to friends and everyone has been commenting on how clean this car is and how modern it feels despite being 16 years old. I have decided to leave it parked and check on it tomorrow. If I don't see a puddle of oil under the car tomorrow I am going to keep the car. If there is oil on the ground, It's back to the auction.

Fingers crossed it doesn't leak.

 

guys remember is a GS300 98 - 05 ur saying is not fast compared now, by that time that was was and is still fast remember is a 2jzge is the same engine as the Toyota supra NA the only is that this car is heavier but that engine is great on that car for donuts and, burnout and goin sideways, for me the GS400 is a total waste of money, I have a GS300 but mine is a project already done, Mine is the ARISTO Vertex version, 3.0 2JZGTE Single Big Turbo, lot on engine and body kit rims and all. and man that car is FAST, SUPER CONFTY in and on the road

 

hes talking about the GS3 =2jzGE not your GTE..... for me the GS300 is a total waste of money..... GS4/430 can still keep up with alot 2018 Models

 

My advice is to keep it! Valve cover gaskets and rear main seal is a common leak on the 2GS; get those fixed and you will have a reliable daily driver for years to come. You can schedule time and have those done. Take care of it and you can easily get 300,000+ miles out of that engine.
