Now, I am worried. Where do the grommets go on the cover? I noticed now that the OP's picture has 8 rings per gasket, are those the grommets you are talking about?
Those are the grommets for the VC bolts, if I'm not mistaken. Everything I've read about this particular motor indicates that everything in the picture + FIPG= completed valve cover gaskets. I don't think there are any other grommets for this.

Ok, now I have to ask what happens if those grommets are not installed? Should I be concerned? Those grommets lay on top of the cover or under the cover? Last time the VC gaskets got replaced was about 120K miles ago and it was done by a shop.

You may leak around the bolt holes, as the grommets are at least as old as the vc gasket.

**Edit** I'd hit up a local parts store to see if they have just the grommets, or if they don't, maybe the dealership.

The grommets are primarily there to dampen the vibrations of the cover and the nuts securing it. As Aged has said there is always a possibility of the covers leaking but I would be more concerned with the covers cracking after a few heat cycles and no grommets.

This brings up another question....how did the shop get the proper torque spec without those grommets being in place? I can guarantee you they did not. You will be very lucky if they did not cost you a set of covers......as those ears where the bolts go are very soft and crack easily!

Here are a couple of pics showing a "properly torqued VC" just for reference!

Sorry Louielace6, felt I have hijacked your thread.

I checked my valve covers and noticed all the bolts have washers on them. Both old and new ones have washers on them (not directly attached to the bolt head but moving freely and does not come off the bolt). New bolts are supposed to be original Lexus part. Maybe the change from using grommets to these new VC bolts with washers? I noticed in the picture above the bolts don't have any washers on them.

The factory bolts do not have additional washers on them. Look at the design of the bolt......its integrated with it.

Not sure I understand what you are saying here about new bolts. there is a metal washer that disperses the torque over the grommets when the bolt is tightened. The grommet goes between the washer & the valve cover, and can be replaced separately of the bolt. See below picture. The black rubber part can be replaced without the rest.

I'm thinking of doing the same repairs on my car on a nice weekend. Here are the parts I'm looking to order:
Gasket
Amazon Amazon
Spark Plugs
Amazon Amazon
Spark Plug Wires
Amazon Amazon
Coil Pack Connectors
Amazon Amazon
PCV Valve
Amazon Amazon

Can someone double check the parts I'm ordering to make sure they are okay? As you can probably tell, I like to do all my shopping on Amazon if it's possible.

Do the ignition coils ever need to be replaced? I saw this set on Amazon but wasn't sure if I actually needed to replace them or just clean the existing ones:
Amazon Amazon

I'm also planning on changing my brake pads and saw this set, any feedback for a good brake set that isn't too expensive?
Amazon Amazon

Thanks for your feedback and help.

I just opened the link for the brakes.
Unless you want a very heavy paperweight, install something better.
I do not think your car will run well, or should I state, brake well with this product.
All four corners ceramic brake pads for $40.00, shipping included? I do not believe so.
