Default Looking to buy 1999 to 2002 GS

I'm looking to buy a 1998 GS 300, or a few years newer, that's in decent running shape. I want it to be a "light & easy project car." What years in that spread would you say from your experience & knowledge are reliable GS's? What year should I stay away from? Thanks

There isn't really a year you should stay away from per se. Depending on your plans for modifications or lack thereof, there is an engine variant that will suit your needs. GS400/430 for out of the box power, and GS300 for turbocharging capabilities.

I guess I was asking if there is a year between 1998 and 2002 that seems to have a lot of problems with the stock engine or auto trans....

The engine and trans are the same, so no.

Default Ok...

So I am hearing that the '98 to 2002 years of GS 300s are pretty reliable and have very few if any problems with the engine and automatic trans. Good to know.

  • J.D. Power and Associates named the GS series the best midsize luxury car in initial quality for 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005.
  • Consumer reports awarded the Lexus GS as the highest ranked vehicle in predicted reliability in the luxury car class in 2005.
^^ I always point these out to people haha.

It truly has to be one of the most reliable luxury cars currently out on the market since it's release. You wont go wrong with a 1998 or 2005, but the question is if certain features matter to you. 01+ had minor changes such as manual shifters on the wheel (on 300's), and upgrades steering pump and brake booster. Despite the changes in features and minor upgrades, no two cars ever drive the same when buying a used car. As mentioned, be sure you test drive several different models such as the 300, 400, and 430. The V8's definitely have a different driving "personality" than the I6.
