Question 98 Gs 400 advice needed

Hi all. I have a 98 gs 400 with 160k. As it sits right now it needs the following done,Cam shaft/Crank shaft seal (oil leaking like a gusher).Timing belt(oil ruined it),OCV,(CEL on, as is the VSC lights)Brakes and exhaust y pipe.Do you guys think I should get it fixed or sell it as a mechanics special or part it out? Really don't know what to do as just the Cam shaft/crank shaft repair is $600.TYIA for the advice.

That's not that many miles for these engines, what's the condition of the rest of the car? Are you able to do any of the work yourself, like brakes and exhaust? Are you going to be able to get as nice of a car for the money you would spend getting your GS fixed?

Yea, it depends.
IF the rest of the car is tip top condition AND the total cost of repairs is under +-$1,200 THEN it might be worth keeping the car.
ELSE you might be better off just selling it.

But, it all depends.

Good luck

It's up to you but I would get it fixed. Keep in mind, you're not going to find something as reliable for the money. I've done the following to my car after 150,000 miles, all dealer serviced (hence the high prices):

2015 - Knock sensors $1,000
2016 - Fuel pump $800
2017 - Timing Belt and Water Pump $1,000 (second time)

I've got 224,000 miles now and it's not even a question if I'm going to get it fixed. I could never find something as reliable so I don't mind putting one repair per year into the car.

Just wondering what were the symptoms that precipitated the need to change the fuel pump.

Here is the original thread: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/gs-...0715-code.html

I was coming back from the beach last year and the car lurched and stalled with 1/4 tank of gas. I immediately took it to the dealer and they ran a fuel pressure test and that proved to be it.

Thank you all for the input.
To be honest the rest of the car is in real good condition.I dare say a little better then some 19 year old cars. How much more miles do you think the engine would have on it?

There really is no telling with this engine...as long as is properly maintained. A friend of mine traded in his '01 LX470 (same engine) with 306,000 miles on it. Not because it was giving him problems but because his kids grew up and went off to college. I was at the dealer recently and he said he saw a 2GS come in with almost 400,000 miles on it. If you search for Highest Mileage GS you'll see several posts of cars with over 300,000 miles. Mine has 224,000 but I'm not worried about it, doesn't use oil and runs great. If, however, by some unforeseen occurrence something did happen I would find a used one on eBay and have my Indy drop it in.

That's a great way to look at it!
If we can learn to work on the car, then some of money spent can go to mods
