The VVTI gear can leak over time. I had an oil leak up top. I had a timing belt service done and told the mechanic to change the valve cover gaskets while he was in there. He called me and told me he was buttoning up the car and to head over to pick it up. As soon as he started it he figured out the VVTI gear was leaking and he had to go back and tear it down to replace. Gave me a discount on the labor to change it since he didn't catch it beforehand.
