Default Tail lights too bright?

My husband an I bought a 98 Lexus GS 300 about a month ago. Last night he was pulle over and the cop sai because the tail lights were too bright they were blinding and considered a safety hazard. They are pretty bright and all the lights come on blinding. Whats causing this?

The previous owner may have put aftermarket or brighter bulbs in there.

Start with replacing all the taillight bulbs with the (correct) standard bulbs.
They are not that expensive.

Just replace them all while you have the taillight taken off.

You have the fog lights on?
Yeah just change the bulbs to stock and you're fine.

Is your center lights faded? I see many 98-00 models with faded inner lights. Those are generally brighter than the outer at that point. Perhaps you have pics?

Just out of curiosity how does the rear fogs work if US/CA models have the inner lights working as braking lights?
Does it then work just like it works with EU/UK/JP etc. models (outer lights work as braking lights)?

Edit: I just read some 3GS thread about rear fogs. Apparently US models don't have rear fogs thus the inners working as braking lights.
I'd prefer that over fogs.

Edit2: Euro spec for those who don't know:

Can't believe you got dinged for that, the cop must have had a bad day.

Some of the new OEM LED tails are insanely bright nowadays across all manufacturers

Don't forget to check the license plate lights too. They could've been changed to super bright aftermarket LED's.

Pics would be helpful, I agree with Ava92. The cop must've had a crappy day to get you for that one.

I hate it when I see that. It looks so ugly and out of place. Kills the look of a Lexus. I usually only see this on 98-00 models.

Yes like others have said its prob your inner tail lights faded. They are annoying if your stuck behind someone who has them. Vinyl film, spray them, or swap them out for new ones.

This.

I really recommend you buy a new set of inner lights.
