Default P1346 and P1351. is it always a timing belt?

With more research I ran across someone throwing those codes and the cam gear mechanisms seemed to be bad. He replaced both oil control valves and recently did a timing belt job. So it seems like it couldnt be really anything else.

I don't know what 1351 is but did you replace the VVTI oil control valve filter?

I pulled them both out and they didnt seem to have filters. I have a 98 GS400. Arent the 300s the ones with the filters? Also when I pulled them out they had a used kind of color but were very much clean. My first oil change welt like this drain oil, Valvoline Max Life blend, ran for 10 minutes, drain, filter change and Mobil 1 15,000 Synthetic. I was hoping the Max life would get into the bearings and also the VVTi solenoids to clean them out. That didnt work.

Did you figure this out yet? My 98 gs400 threw p1346 and p1351 code after I bought it. The car drove fine for 100 miles. Checked the timing and the timing was off but ran smooth. Lined the cams and everything up and everything sound better. Than started to give me the same codes. Cleared it, drove it for 10 minutes and it was good but came back. Don't know what to do.
