Default rear main seal

I tried to search but to no help. I removed the old rear main seal (first time for me) but I'm having trouble installing the new one.

I tried tapping it to go in evenly but it keeps coming out. Then I tried again and it went in to far and isn't flushed against the pulley (don't know the name of it) I had to remove again and ended up tearing it because I had no seal puller. So I'll have to buy another one and hopefully it will go in smoother this time. Also do you use any type of sealant or grease on the seal? What about the flex plate bolts.Do I use redtite? Thanks

I saw that and a few others, but the seal carrier is still on the block.I don't want to remove it if I don't have too.

Remove the seal carrier and call it a day. If you don't remove that carrier you won't get the seal seated properly to seal and totally defeats the purpose of replacing the rear main seal.
