From what I've read, its rarely the canister so I guess this is one of those rare times if they're positive. I cant imagine how it comes out without at least dropping an axle/diff or the gas tank. I assume when the car was built, that was bolted up before the driveline etc. Good luck man, I still haven't gotten to repairing mine since it only throws a CEL, otherwise, it really has no effect on anything minus an emissions/inspection test.

My friend who has a 2001 GS300 also had these codes and changed the whole canister assembly without taking off the shaft either. I do believe he had to bend a thin metal lip on one of the body panels in the wheel well right above the subframe as the canister would not slide out with out bending that metal lip. Also I believe it came out through the passenger side too.

Are you 100% sure it's the canister you need?
Hate to have you spend all that $$$ replacing it when all you needed was the VSV which is only 40.00 and 1 hour of labor
