Next I removed the black tab & connected the tube to the intake.

Next I started the car & set a brick on the accelerator to hold the rpm at 2500. The cup has a hook on it to hang on the hood latch. Poured the seafoam in the cup.

Then I slowly cracked the valve open so the seafoam can slowly drip thru the iv sight glass. Warning: you allow it to shoot thru too fast it'll make the check engine light on. So I went slow

No more smoke.
Let it run until the intake sucks all the seafoam thru the intake. You will see tons of smoke coming out of the exhaust. Then I put the tab back in then & let the car run until everything went clear & smoke went away. Intake nice and clean

What exactly was the reason for embarking on this exercise? Were there symptoms that indicated that a cleaning was needed?

See the label on the can in pic # 2.
I did this years ago on my old Nissan 300ZX with good results, However I am hesitant to do it on my cars as I most likely will have to replace the O2 sensors which gets fouled up from all the smoke. I just installed 4 brand new OEM sensors and don't want to get them messed up.
I just use Lucus injector cleaner every other tank of gas to keep the fuel system clean.

Lucas doesn't work. You need something with a good amount of PEA in it

The purpose is to break up carbon that builds up from over the years. Try to keep it running like new.
