complete 1uzfe gs400 engine removal/timing belt/starter rebuild/reintall
Well i am a little new to lexus, my 2006 avalon got totaled in a hail storm, instead of going into debt, i purchased a 1999 gs400 with 160,000 on it. Just had brakes, struts, and still had 30,000 before the timing belt would need to be done. I loaned my car to my sister, the only thing that i can figure is that she put it in second and drove 40 miles at 80mph........needless to say time for an engine. Here goes nothing.......
Just picked up the engine/transmission from the freight terminal...

Step 2
Got the engine up on a table where i could take a look at it. Pulled all the front covers off. i then proceeded to turn the engine around until the line lined up with the line on the right bank, the dot with the line on the left bank and the and the crank at tdc...pretty simple. Turn 50 degrees more so that the line on the crank pully lines up with the idler pulley bolt center....pulled the crank pulley, which fell right off...nice...

out with the old
pulling the motor was pretty straight forward....disconnect all the wires from the ecu box on the right front of the engine bay, remove battery and tray, remove the air cleaner, radiator, fans, unbolt the exhaust at the cats, heat sheld, driveshaft, a couple of ground straps, remove the ps pump and ac compressor and pull them to the side. I also unbolted the sway bar for a little extra clearance.

The old motor
Now that the motor is out and on the other table time to take a look....hmmmm
1. plastic on front cover melted, the one that slides in below the left bank.
2. Knock sensor melted.
3. so so so so much oil and antifreeze pushed up throught the valves...you should have smelled the 1000 mile old amsoil signature series...had to put the bucket outside.....
4. timing belt stressed out...so much rubber burn....
My poor car...and she said "it just died"......stupid me...just say no.....

******first real issue*******
Since i got an engine from japan, the starter wire exits the back of the engine to the wrong side. right hand drive vs left hand drive. this is what compelled me to remove the manifold off the old engine, needed to see how it was wired up....there is also an extra wire (if you look in the pic it is the little red one with the yellow stipe). After looking at it i estimated that i could put a new end on the japan wire and it would reach the battery, but then my common sense took over so here is the plan.
Going to swap starters and wiring. Since i have the intake off the new motor, rebuild the starter ($20 cost), replace the intake gaskets, and clean up the dead space under the intake. Easy to do with engine on the table, difficult if i put it back in the car and that red and yellow wire might be important. oh yeah the one plug on that part of the harness has 3 prongs on my old motor and 4 prongs on the japan motor. top pic is the old motor and bottom pic is the japan motor.
