Default Maintainence Questions

HI Guys,

My friend has a 99 GS300, with 185k. He just had the timing belt and water pump replaced, along with spark plugs and a faulty coil. Tomorrow we are going to do an oil change, transmission drain, differential drain, and change the ps fluid.

Couple of questions?
  • Is it ok to use 75w-90 for the differential fluid?
  • If I'm not mistaken the transmission and power steering uses Dexron III
  • Would you guys recommend using High Mileage Fluid on the transmissions and power steering? such as Valvoline Max Life?
  • What are you opinions on seafoaming the car at this age and mileage?

Thanks Greatly

Double check with lexus but the diff fluid would be fine.
Dexron III...yes (but again double check)
Good quality tranny and power steering fluid will do just fine, high mileage is mostly bull****
Seafoaming car would be great for it, but make sure you do it correctly

OK,my friend called Sewell Lexus and they immediately told him Type IV, before he gave the model and year information. Are they correct?

Exactly, Thank You

He just called me and got four quarts of Type-IV from Sewell Lexus. The parts guy said that the Power Steering uses a different type of fluid, hope he's right.

Thanks every one for your help. Should get another 100k out of this Lexus.

hey guys, i know the ps fluid asks for DIII, my question is, can i put in type 4 instead?
type 4 is supposed to be better than D3 in the transmission, so the same should apply to power steering pump, right?

For the ps, they gave us this clear type of fluid. Don't remember what it was. Call you dealer and ask.

These are all very basic questions that are addressed in the owner's manual (and/or the DIY sticky in this forum). Because you are asking these questions, I surmise that you haven't read the manual.

Please do read the manual before attempting any service otherwise your next 10posts will be asking how to undo your mistakes.
