Default tanabe medallion installed - few q's in sound

I know most the fellow members here would disagree but here goes.

So I got my tanabe medallion installed 2 days ago. I love the way it looks and sounds on highway speeds but the low end revving & the loss in back pressure makes the vehicle VERY sluggish for the i6 and is too much for me and my wife (wish i had the 430 here). I do NOT want to change it back to stock i just want to tone down that low end RAAAENG sound and make it a hum. I am near 30yrs old and just want the vehicle mainly for appearance/functionality factors. what choices do I have to tone down the exhaust just about 1/2 to 1/4 more? adding aftermarket resonators and deleting the straight pipes off the cat back? or can i keep the original construction of the tanabe in case i sell the vehicle down the line and add a resonator somewhere else along the piping to lower the sound and gain back a little of the back pressure?

PLEASE SEE BELOW POST #15 - NEED HELP WITH PIPING DIAMETER

Lose the cat back and use the axle backs only. But you might need to modify the flanges to make it fot with th OEM cat back

which did you get? the Hyper or Touring? i think the hyper is no longer available. It sucks that you spend all that money and time to have something you were apparently not prepared for.

Either way depending the model you can put on silencers at the tips, the Hyper uses the same size tip dim. apexi uses for there silencers.

are you getting drone in lower gears?

when i had the 300, i associated the sound to a drowning depressed cow in heat... it wasnt bad at throttle, but like you said, at low rpms, id say under 3000rpm, it just sounded depressing.

i put the same exhaust on my 430 now, much deeper and mature tone.

i got the gs300 and the touring exhaust. the sound is not bad at all in any other range. just at the lower gears the drone gets to you.

i think i might need to custom the whole catback since the medallion uses its own piping and is not the same size in length as the oem's. do you think there would be any room near the Y pipe i can chop & weld a small resonator to to eliminate some of that lower drone?

yah. it seems most folks who has the right sound in all came from the 400/430's but the 300's are not quite there. maybe i need to drive another few hundred miles break them in fully. i already put a good 150 + miles on it driving spirited with stop and go.

another option is to get an apexi EVC. i have one on my supra and had one on my Silvia back in the day. It is a nice piece and works well. works so well it reduced my cabin and most important outside noise by half. I used it when rolling by the PIGS. they never bothered me once. i would look into other options beside cutting and modifying the Tanabe or OEM Pre cat-back. Once you customize it its hard to go back to OEM specs, and can be a pain when trying to sell either the car or exhaust.

Not really unless your Boosted. it is recommended not to boost when its closed since there will be too much back pressure causing a drop in boost level.

On an NA, totally different story. BTW when the valve is closed there is still a min amount of open area, otherwise you would stall

Very interesting. This might change my mind about buying an exhaust.

that looks like my best option! i was also thinking about if i was to hack the pieces up it will be hard later to find them again or to resell the items since the tmt is a hot item and used oem full systems are hard to come by. im going to really read up on this and let you guys know how the outcome went! thanks again for the input.

anyone know which one would fit our 2nd gens?
155-A020 ECV, Flange-Type 51mm 90-107mm
155-A022 ECV, FLANGE-TYPE. 61mm 92-110mm

anyone can help with the piping diameter???

51mm = 2in
61mm = 2.4in
67mm = 2.63in

our oem piping is 2.5 i believe. should i go with the 61 or 67? planning to put this after the cat.

67mm would be fine. the 80mm is actually 3.15 but fits most 3" applications.

i believe they had a 70mm which was for NA applications for 2.5 thru 2.75. it has enough surface to allow for the size difference (hence one size fits all)

hope this helps

or blow out your intake if you can vent the blow back from the waste gate not opening quick enough

i was a little afraid i had the measurements wrong that if the piping is 2.5 something larger the butterfly flap would hit the piping causing it not to fit or operate properly since the diameter is bigger... im looking at the flange type btw if that makes a difference.

shouldnt i use a 61mm? since the piping diameter for the Tanabe medallion is 60mm? im afraid the 67mm seems too big but I could be wrong?
