Default 1999 Gs300 Engine Rattle/knock/noise

Good evening all. I would like to come to the Gurus of the Lexus forum for help about my GS300.

There is a noise in the engine that is driving me nuts. I have made multiple searches in this forum and Google and cannot seem to find the solution. The noise is intermittent at idle but almost 90% there when the A/C is on. This would typically lead me to the AC compressor (clutch, bearing, etc.) but it also does it when I let go of the gas (with the AC off). I had made some youtube videos of it today so you can see and hear what I am talking about. I also thought it could be the belt tensioner as it would also be related. I have changed it with a new one and it still does not change the problem. I am really hoping it is not a rod knock but I really don't think it is as it does it after I let go of the gas. I have not made any tests on the rod knock yet as it is really late here and my neighbors wouldn't be too happy.

This is with the AC on. You can clearly hear the rattle/noise.

This is with the AC off but revving it. You could hear the same sound right when I let go of the throttle.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

It sounds like the noise is originating at the back of the motor.
Could your starter be hitting the flex plate? Exhaust leak?

In any case I would pull the rubber plug under the car at the bell housing and have a look.

Other than that is the car running normal?

Above links didn't work...
This is with the AC on
This is with the AC off

Did you ever figure out what your noise is? I just bought an 01 GS300 today and it makes a similar noise. Doesn't matter if the AC is on or off. It seems to come from either the AC Clutch or the PS pump.

I'm having the exact same problem.(
) Have you found the problem? I am waiting for a Tech friend to have a look (listen) and will let you know. The only problem is it will take him a couple of weeks to get over and have a look.

Sounds like the bearings in the motor are hitting the cam shaft, better solve this issue fast or you can endure catastrophic failure.

I have found the problem that has been bugging me for the past couple of months and i will now confirm what caused my issue with the noise and that issue is broken tensioner pulley (idler pulley). mine completely broke in half thank goodness it did not do more damage than it should. hopefully this can help you guys out because hearing the same noise on the video posted on here is the sound of a broken pulley in the timing belt area. here is the pix of mine that broke in half.

well thats part of my problem found out that the rattling and knocking is still present. but it is definitely coming from the oil filter. if you put your hands on it you can feel the vibrations definitely coming from that area so it is internally. i will keep this posted until i find out the problem and fix it.

take your serpentine belt off and run it. just be aware that your water pump is not running without the belt. you can't run the engine for long. Also, check for exhaust hitting somewhere.
