Default Question about HIDs

If your GS did not have HIDs and you had a choice, would you buy an aftermarket HID kit or an OEM Kit with the self leveling feature? Both are approximately the same price. I'm trying to figure this 1 out.

No answers, just questions. The ClubLexus group buy was for $450 ($500 normally) for the kit. How much are OEM kits?

manny, yep thinking about getting the 1s in the classifieds. I like the auto leveling feature though. I usually park them @ ABT. I might be able to park elsewhere if the storm comes this way. I'll let you know if there are extra stalls there if you are interested.

Over, where is that thread on the group buy? I did a search but can't find it. There are 2 OEM kits listed in the classifieds @ 600 and 575. If you have the info on the group buy please post the link here.

Thanks

MAC,

With the OEM HID, you still will not have the auto-leveling feature. mkilty the previous owner of this site did it but due to lack of the wiring to power the auto-leveling motor, you can hook up the lights but not the motors.

I don't know how hard to run another power suppply to the motors but it's not a plug&play direct replacements.

I'm not sure if my friend has sold them already but he told me he had a brand new set of Lexus OEM HID's complete with the whole headlamp assembly. Last I heard he wanted to get rid of them...I'll ask him later on today and see what he wants for them.

Regards,

Do you know how hard it is to install auto-levelling? Not just the levelling motors as previously addressed, but auto-levelling uses active sensors behind all four wheels with a central ECU to control and adjust the motors accordingly. Nevertheless, I 100% recommend you buy the OEM setup. If you want blue ricer bulbs, you can buy those later on. It'll be much cheaper that way than buying the cut off, beam pattern, depth, and weatherproofing of the OEM housing later on. Kits have no comparison to the real deal OEM setup.

well i don't really care much about the stock hid. autoleveling is good but imho i don't get to use it that often. moreover if you spend time to find deals on the internet, you can get a set of 4100k philips conversion kit for around 400 bucks, and a set of phlips 6000k for 500 bucks. compare to the price of a stock (4100k) hid light set it's still much cheaper. and yes, of course you have to keep in mind install the auto-levling setup in a gs that doesn't have that feature involves a lot of work.

its kind of hard to say..

oem kit has its own advantages.. actually i only know one (auto leveling)

aftermarket hid kit would have better lightining but no auto leveling

One other advantage of the OEM setup is that the HID housing is specifically designed for the HID lights. HID housings have a different reflector pattern than halogen housings.

I haven't seen an aftermarket HID kit in person, but I am inerested to see if the housings do actually make a difference.

All,

Thanks for the wealth of info. I knew I could count on you all. Over, I didn't realize all that was involved ingetting the auto-leveling feature installed. Thanks for the tip.

For those that have converted to aftermarket HIDs and used the OEM halogen housing, how is the output? Any pics? Would it be similar to what Manaray posted re: SC400?

Thanks again.

Other way around!!! How many times do I have to explain this?!! OEM has way better lighting properties in every last aspect.

- Beam pattern: very well defined, not a shot in the dark attempt like kits
- Beam: solid, evenly spread, not streaky, blotchy, or uneven;
- Cut-off: sharp, well defined, and meets government regulations--legal!
- Depth: much farther reaching depth without having to adjust aiming screws up to eye level and blinding all other motorists
- Color: optimal, daylight white offers the best road contrast, least eye fatigue, least amount of glare
- Endurance: best out there, everything is weatherproof, sealed, warrantied, no worries about mediocre bulb conversions or subpar rebasing.
- Appearance: not ricer, doesn't bother/blind other drivers, looks clean and respectable to those like me on the road, complimentary to your car

BTW, auto-levelling is not a function used sometimes. It's ALWAYS working in realtime whether you notice it or not.

You be the judge. A1exus' "8000K HID kit" from ~5 feet away (both sides on)....

Honda Civic with Lexus IS300/LS430 OEM conversion from ~10 feet away (driver side on only)....
