Hi,

I also have to do the oil change on my GS300.

1. 5W30
2. synthetic (not semi)
3. somewhere between 5.2 - 5.5L depending on the size of your oil filter
4. Popular brands are Mobil1, Castrol and Royal Purple

I've decided to go with Castrol Edge 5W30.

heres my input..

1) 5W30
2) Personally Full Synthetic.. but its personal Pref... (you can do Regular conventional if you want.. or semi syth or full syth.. your money your car)
3) buy a 5 Quart Jug and 1 extra quart in case you need to top off
4) Personal Pref. Castrol - Mobil 1 - Penzoil - Royal Purple - Amsoil - Enyos

edit: Dam i read you're from Scotland... so iono whats the quart to liter conversion but hopefully they sell the big jugs there

A quart is a bit less than a liter I believe.

10W30... (Remember mileage plays a key role here)***
mobil1 SYNTHETIC
approx. 5.5 (I have a 430 and it took 6.5 qts)

Mobil1 has been good to me thus far... Castrol should be just fine as well...

I've heard that if the car has been using regular oil and is switched to synthetic after many miles... It will leak through the gaskets; does it happen all the time? No, but it happens often. I believe thats my problem but I deal with it since its only a very minor drip and I never go low. My personal fav is Castrol or Mobil 1. As for weight, has to do with weather, during colder climates/seasons you want a thiner oil. During hotter weather you want a bit thicker so it doesnt heat up. I do 5w30 for winter and 10w30 for summer but thats for California caca weather.

How often? I ask because it's very rare now. It used to be an issue, but it has been years. I ran regular dino oil for years in another vehicle, and when it hit 75K, I switched to a high mileage synthetic. No leaks, no drips, no errors - even after 35K miles. This was 9 years ago. Oils certainly have not degraded since then.

Current DD, being a 4 banger, was definitely not treated to synthetics prior to me owning it. I have used synthetics for nearly 2 years now, and not a drop of oil has leaked.

I think you're on the right track. Unless you do a ton of extended high speed driving in high temperatures, though, 5W-30 should be fine pretty much all the time.

Maybe cause its 'high mileage' oil and thats what took care of the problem? just a question/comment. I'm using regular synthetic... maybe thats problem

Nope. I use regular synthetic in the DD and no leaks. Sounds like you had a seal that was going bad, and perhaps the higher flowing synthetic popped whatever was clogging the leak free?

The reason why you may get oil leaks after switching to a synthetic oil is if your seals and gaskets are in bad shape to begin with. The equivalent weight of synthetic oil is still slightly thinner than the same weight in a conventional oil. Your car was probably already leaking oil very slightly to begin with, but not significant enough to notice. However, when changing over to the synthetic, the thinner viscosity of the oil caused it to start seeping through the cracks in the seals.
